The next morning, Mom and Dad gave me the biggest scolding of my life. I almost thought they were even going to ground me from school!
But when I mentioned the reason I was out late was that I was with friends, mom was quelled-happy I had made some friends. My dad also calmed down after I promised to text them next time.
Oddly enough neither parent had even questioned where I had hung with my friends, but mom did insist I bring them over sometime.
Apparently even though I had finished all my school in class and had no extra homework, I still had to wait for the study hall bell dismissal. I guess that is definitely one part of homeschooling-being able to be done with school early in the day and not have to wait for school dismissal bells. Now I was trying to enjoy my study hall period after school while I waited for the bells to ring signifying that we could all leave.
"Hey two eyes, what stupid book are you reading?"
"Don't you mean four eyes?" Pushing my glasses up my nose, I didn't even spare a glance up. "And I'm reading A book on how to deal with annoying boys named Vince."
"what?" the boy sputtered. All of sudden the manuscript was wrenched from my hands.
I looked up to see Vince, scowling at me, the book in his hands. He glared at me, clenching the book tightly in his hands. "You're lying. This is just a piece of junk..."
"A piece of junk written by Charles Dickens," I interrupted.
At once Vince's scowl slipped into a frown, he glanced down at the book in his hands as he turned it over. I spotted a flicker in his brown eyes...flicker of curiosity.
"Tale of two cities," I stood up from the bench I had been seated on. "My favorite by him. You can borrow it."
"I..." Looking up, Vince stared at me, a confused expression on his face. "But...I..."
"You might really like it, his other work is kinda tedious but I loved this one!" I pushed the book against his chest and then walked away, calling over my shoulder. 'Give it a shot, you might like it."
As I walked toward the front of the school, I questioned my actions. Why had I done that...given him the book...I did not know...it was as if my body acted on its own.
Something in the brief glimpse I caught of Vince's eyes...the flicker of interest....it had made me wonder if he might enjoy the book.
"Hey Aurelia!"
The loud shout broke me out of my thoughts.
Turning, I spotted a pink blur as Miko barrelled into me, knocking me to the ground.
"Oof," I grunted, the breath knocked out of me.
"Sorry!" The girl was very apologetic as she helped me to my feet and gathered my books back into my satchel for me.
