I stared at the two children in front of me  in shock. I must be getting pranked. I looked around briefly before looking back at them.

"I'm sorry you must have the wrong person. I don't have any kids." I tell them. I don't even have a significant other.

"You do. You had us." Briar replied.

"With our mum." Lionel then said.

"You have a mom already?" I asked getting more confused and they both nodded.

"Then why not go to her. I'm sure she's worried about you both." I say turning back towards my car to open the door and got in.

"But she needs your help." Lionel told me as I shut my door.

"Why would she need my help? I don't even know her." I say starting up my car, before looking at my watch. Why am I even still entertaining this? I'm obviously being messed with in a cruel way.

"You do know her. You're married to her." Briar said and I glanced at her in disbelief. First they say I'm their mother, now I'm married? To their other mother. I've had all of two relationships in my life and both only lasted a few months. I shook my head at them again.

"I'm sorry but I'm not who you're looking for. I'm sorry I have to go." I say to them, backing out of my driveway.

"Wait! Please!" They both called out in a begging tone but I ignored their cries as I continued to back out and turn around.

I was about to pull away completely, when I looked in my overhead mirror and spotted them watching me as I leave and something about their sad expressions made me stop the car. I may not believe this story they're telling , but I couldn't just leave two children standing here alone. I looked at my watch again and sighed before backing the car up.

"Get in the car. I can at least take you to your mom." I tell them and they looked at each other silently.

"Actually we haven't ate much this morning. Can we get something to eat first." Briar asked me and I sighed again. I suspected that was an excuse but I would do it anyway, just to be nice.

"Sure. Come on." I say and watched as they got in the back seat. "Fasten your seatbelts." I say and they gave each other a look, almost like something was funny but did it anyway. I wonder if they do that all the time? I shook my head as I drove. This is such a weird birthday. I thought as I drove. I decided I would feed them at my job before going to drop them off home.

When we got there I gestured to one of the tables by the window. "You two can sit in one of the booths. What would you like to eat?" I asked and they glanced at each other again.

"Pancakes." They Both said in unison and something about that made me smile.

"Okay go sit down and I'll bring that to you soon." I tell them and watched as they sat down ,before I went behind the counter to where my friend Emma stood.

Emma was more outgoing than I was, not to mention a year younger than I was. "Hey whose kids are those?" She asked me, as she glanced over at them and I followed her gaze and sighed.

"I have no idea. They appeared on my doorstep claiming I'm their mother." I say to her in a low tone and she raised her eyebrow at me curiously.

"I mean did you?..." she asked and raised her eyebrow more pointedly.

"What? No of course not!" I say shaking my head and rolling my eyes at the silly question. "I think I would know if I had two kids. Wouldn't you?" I said before asking our cook to make some pancakes for me.

"Well things happen." She said shrugging as she glanced over at the table they were at. "I don't know, looking at the girl she looks like you a little." Emma teased and I rolled my eyes.

"Stop it. This has been a crazy morning and an even crazier start to my birthday. I'm just gonna feed them and then take them home." I tell her.

"So they have a home?" She asked raising her eyebrow.

"Well yeah do they look like orphans or something?" I asked confused at her question.

"Well they could be foster kids or runaways." Emma replied with a shrug. From the bit that I know about Emma, she was a foster kid herself, but rather like the ones with bad experiences, she had managed to actually get adopted by her last foster family. She also told me she wanted to become a foster parent herself.

"No they claim to have a mother. Well another mother." I answer the questioning stare on her face.

"Another mom?" She questioned and I rolled my eyes at the tone of her question.

"Obviously their real mom. As I told you I'm not their mother."

"That you know of." She teased and I sighed again. "Maybe they're playing Cupid." She then responded and I looked at her curiously. "Maybe they're trying to hook you up with their mom." She clarified.

"Why would they do that? I've never even met their mom, not to mention all the people in this city they could try to hook her up with, why would they choose me?" I say as I picked up the pancakes the cook sat down.

"Well honestly Sumire, you need to be with someone. You never go out on dates and I never see you flirt with anyone." Emma said.

"Trust me I get enough flirting around here." I say with an eye roll and sigh.

"I mean with people you're actually attracted to." She said, smiling teasingly.

"Yeah that should be easy." I say sarcastically with another sigh as I headed over to the table and sat the plates down in front of them, before sitting in the seat across from them as they ate. I watched them silently as they ate the pancakes with a smile on their faces.

"So you two really like pancakes huh." I asked them quietly.

"Yeah kinda." Lionel said picking up another bite on his fork, while his sister poured more syrup on hers.

"When mum lets us eat it." Briar said before eating a bite of her own.

"Your mom sounds reasonable then. To much sugar is bad for you." I say with a small smile.

"That's what you always tell us too." Briar said licking a bit of Syrup off her fingers.

"Yeah about this mom thing..." I say running my hands through my bob- styled hair. I used to have long hair in my teens but I cut it and had kept it bob style for as long as I can remember. "What makes you think I'm your mom?" I ask, looking at them.
