The halls of Ever After High were alive with chatter as students hurried to their next classes. Raven Queen, daughter of the Evil Queen, walked down the corridor, her mind racing. She had been assigned a project on magical artifacts in Professor Rumpelstiltskin's class, and as usual, Raven had found herself in a bit of a bind. She was never one for traditional magic, especially when it came to creation spells. She preferred the darker arts, the ones that involved curses and clever tricks.
But then she saw you.
Y/N, her quiet yet brilliant classmate, was standing by her locker, looking at a textbook. You were always so graceful, so composed. Raven couldn’t help but admire you from a distance. You were calm when Raven’s own thoughts felt like a storm, and you always had this gentle way of offering support. She couldn't help but feel a flutter of something in her chest whenever you were near.
Raven shook her head. Focus. The project. She needed help.
"Y/N!" Raven called out, walking toward you, trying to sound casual. "I could really use your help with something. I’ve got this magic artifact project, and well, you’re much better at the practical stuff than I am."
Y/N looked up, smiling warmly at Raven. "Of course, Raven. I’m happy to help. What do you need?"
"Well," Raven began, a bit hesitant, "I’ve been trying to craft this enchanted mirror, but the incantation keeps going wrong. It’s supposed to reflect not just physical images but the truest desires of the heart." She sighed. "But all it’s doing is showing weird, random visions of—" Raven paused, her face flushing slightly. She couldn’t believe she was about to say this.
"Of what?" Y/N asked, her tone full of genuine curiosity.
Raven took a deep breath. "Of… me," she muttered, eyes darting away. "I don’t know why, but it keeps showing me in various situations, like I’m supposed to learn something from it. It’s as though the magic is trying to show me something deeper." She laughed awkwardly. "But I can’t figure it out, and I’m definitely not an expert in... this kind of magic."
Y/N smiled, a soft and understanding expression, and stepped closer to Raven. "Well, maybe it’s trying to tell you something important. Maybe it’s about your desires too, not just the mirror’s." Y/N’s voice was low, comforting, and there was something in the way she said it that made Raven’s heart skip a beat.
"Yeah," Raven agreed, although she was still feeling the warmth of Y/N’s presence. "I guess maybe it’s trying to tell me something about what I want... but, well, I don’t know what that is yet."
There was an awkward silence between them, and Raven’s gaze flickered to the floor. "I should probably try again," she said, gesturing toward the project materials.
But Y/N caught her arm gently, halting her. "Raven, maybe you’re not meant to figure it out alone. I think you need to trust your instincts, and… trust yourself." Y/N’s hand lingered just a moment longer before pulling away, her smile never fading.
Raven felt her chest tighten. She had spent so much time pushing people away, especially when they offered her kindness, but in that moment, she wanted to tell Y/N so much more than she had ever meant to admit. She swallowed hard, then, before she could stop herself, the words escaped her lips.
"I... I think I might know what I really want," Raven blurted, looking up into Y/N’s eyes. "It’s not just about magic or this project or even my legacy. What I really want, Y/N, is…" She stopped herself, realizing the weight of what she had just said. Her face flushed a deep shade of purple, and she looked away quickly. "Sorry. Forget I said that."
Y/N didn’t let her retreat. "Raven," she said softly, stepping closer again, "you don’t have to apologize for that. I think I understand."
Raven felt her heart race, her hands nervously clutching the magical materials she had been carrying. She hadn’t meant to confess it like that. It had just slipped out. But Y/N’s smile was gentle and understanding, like she wasn’t shocked or put off by what Raven had said.
Before Raven could even think to explain herself, Y/N reached out and touched her hand. "Raven, you don’t have to figure it out right now. But if you ever want to talk, I’m here," Y/N said, her voice a comforting whisper.
Raven’s breath caught in her throat. She had always kept people at arm’s length, but with Y/N, it was different. She wanted to be close, wanted to let her guard down for the first time in so long. She was scared, but in the same breath, she felt an undeniable warmth filling her chest.
Raven finally allowed herself to meet Y/N’s eyes again. "Thanks, Y/N. You make it easier to... to see things clearly."
The two of them stood there for a few moments in silence, the magic of the mirror forgotten for the time being, replaced by something far more powerful. Raven’s heart was still racing, but now, it was because of something more than just fear or uncertainty.
"Well," Y/N said with a small grin, "I think we might have just found the answer to your project. Sometimes, the magic you need is the one closest to you."
Raven felt a smile tug at her lips, and for the first time in a long while, she didn’t feel the need to hide her emotions. "Yeah," she agreed, her voice soft but sure, "I think you’re right."
And maybe, just maybe, the mirror was showing her exactly what she needed to see all along.
