Anjali's PovThat day, during class hours, an unexpected announcement from the dean created a ripple of excitement throughout the college: a trip for all students! The news spread like wildfire, and within seconds, the entire classroom erupted with cheers. "Wow!!" we all shouted in unison, our faces lighting up with anticipation.
I could barely contain my enthusiasm as I hurried to sign up for the trip. The thought of an adventurous day away from routine filled me with joy. But then, reality hit me—I was still Arnav’s assistant. I couldn’t just leave without informing him. My excitement faltered momentarily, but I resolved to ask for permission during the break.
When the time came, I rushed to Arnav, my heart pounding with a mix of nervousness and excitement. "Boss, actually, we have a trip tomorrow!" I blurted out, barely able to keep my eagerness in check. "So, I actually wanted to go! Can I get a day off, please?" My voice was hopeful, my eyes pleading.
To my surprise, Arnav’s face softened into a warm smile. "Don’t worry," he said, his tone light and reassuring. "We’re also joining the same trip! So, yeah, I’ll be there too!"
My heart skipped a beat at his words. The idea of spending an entire day with Arnav, outside of work, made my excitement soar even higher.
"And," he added, his eyes twinkling with amusement, "no need to call me ‘Boss’ in front of everyone. You can just call me Arnav."
For a moment, I was stunned by the casual warmth in his demeanor. He seemed so different—so relaxed and approachable. It was like seeing a new side of him, and I couldn’t help but grin from ear to ear. "Thank you, Arnav!" I exclaimed, unable to contain my excitement.
Before I realized what I was doing, I reached out and pinched both his cheeks playfully. "So cute of you!" I said impulsively, laughing at the surprised look on his face.
Arnav’s eyes widened in shock, his expression frozen for a second. My laughter died abruptly as I registered what I’d just done. My face flushed with embarrassment, and I quickly glanced around to make sure no one had witnessed the exchange. "I... I am so sorry, Boss! I mean, Arnav! I was just very excited, and..." I stammered, my words tumbling over themselves.
To my relief, Arnav smiled warmly, his gaze soft and understanding. "It’s okay," he said, his voice calm and gentle. "I know you’re happy, and I don’t mind."
His words melted away my embarrassment, and I left feeling lighter than ever. At home, I packed my bags with an infectious excitement, already imagining the fun that awaited. But amid my happiness, I couldn’t help but wish Priya were there too. Her absence left a small void, and I knew the trip would’ve been even more special if she could have joined.
---
The next morning, we arrived at the destination, and the energy was electric. Everyone was buzzing with excitement, their laughter and chatter filling the air. The place was breathtaking, with vibrant greenery and scenic views stretching as far as the eye could see.
We explored the area with unbridled enthusiasm, soaking in every moment. Arnav was there, mingling with the group, his usual stern demeanor replaced by a lighthearted charm. I couldn’t help but steal glances at him, marveling at how much he had changed—how he seemed so approachable, so... human.
The day was filled with laughter, jokes, and little adventures. Every moment felt like a memory in the making, and I found myself cherishing the ease and joy of being surrounded by friends, sharing in the excitement of the trip.
In the midst of all the fun, I realized something—I wasn’t just excited about the trip itself. It was the connection, the shared experiences, and the sense of belonging that made it truly special. And somewhere in the middle of it all, my thoughts kept drifting back to Arnav, wondering if he felt the same spark of joy that I did.
That night, after a long day of excitement, we all retreated to our rooms, ready to call it a day. I was just about to settle into bed when my classmate, Neha, suddenly appeared at my door. She looked thrilled, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
"Hey Anju!" she called out in a hushed but excited voice. "We girls are playing truth or dare around the campfire outside! Come join us!"
Her enthusiasm was contagious, and I couldn’t resist. "Truth or dare?" I repeated, already feeling a thrill of anticipation. "Alright, I’m in!" I said, quickly throwing on my sweater before heading out.
---
The campfire illuminated the night, casting flickering shadows on our faces as we sat in a circle. The warmth of the flames and the cheerful chatter of my classmates created an atmosphere of excitement. I felt a surge of energy as I joined the group, laughing and joking as the bottle spun for each turn.
When the bottle finally pointed at me, my heart skipped a beat. "Truth or dare?" someone asked, their voice tinged with playful challenge.
Without hesitation, I chose, "Dare!" I figured it couldn’t be that hard, right? But as soon as the dare was announced, my confidence wavered.
"Your dare," a girl said with a sly grin, "is to sneak into a boy's room and come back with his phone!"
My eyes widened in disbelief. "What?! That’s way too risky! Can’t you think of something else?" I protested, glancing around at the group.
But instead of sympathy, I was met with a chorus of encouragement. "Come on, Anju! A dare is a dare! You can’t back out!" they chanted, their laughter ringing out in the night.
I sighed, realizing there was no way out. "Fine!" I said, mustering my courage. I tried to steady my racing heart as I considered my options. If I had to do this, there was only one person I could turn to: Arnav.
---
I crept through the quiet hallways, my heart pounding in my chest. The boys’ floor was eerily silent, the stillness making my every step feel deafening. I prayed no one would catch me; the thought of being found sneaking around was mortifying.
Reaching the boys' floor, I looked around. All the doors were closed, and it seemed like everyone was fast asleep. My nerves eased slightly, but I still felt my pulse quicken as I began my search for Arnav's room.
As I moved quietly, I couldn’t help but think about him. I trusted Arnav; he was the only person I felt comfortable going to for help. But what would he say when he found out I was sneaking into his room for a silly dare? Would he be mad? Or would he laugh at the ridiculousness of it all?
Determined to get through this without waking anyone, I continued down the hallway, My nerves were on edge, but I knew I couldn’t back out now. A dare was a dare, and I was determined to see it through.
As I continued searching for Arnav’s room, I kept glancing over my shoulder, praying no one would catch me sneaking around at this hour.
Suddenly, my elbow brushed against a table in the dimly lit corridor, and I realized too late that a large vase was precariously perched on its edge. Before I could stop it, the vase tipped over and crashed onto the floor with a deafening sound.
The shattering noise echoed down the hallway, shattering the silence and sending a wave of panic through me. My breath hitched as I froze, my eyes wide with horror. Oh no, oh no, oh no ! I thought, frantically looking around.
One by one, lights flickered on behind closed doors, casting eerie shadows across the corridor. My stomach twisted in dread as I imagined everyone waking up and finding me here. My mind raced, trying to think of an excuse if someone caught me.
But before I could even move, a strong hand clamped firmly over my mouth, silencing my panicked gasp. My feet left the ground as I was pulled backwards into a room by a firm grip around my waist.
