I walked through the double doors and was met by the secretary’s scowl. I gulped and a barely audible squeak escaped my lips.
“Your excuse miss?” growled the lady.
“My-My what?” I squealed.
“Your excuse, Why are you late!” she barked”
“Oh right… well I , I…I guess I don’t have one” I mumbled feeling my cheeks start to blush.
“Mmm of course you don’t. Well I will be seeing you after school then for detention…Nia…” she sighed “Can’t wait, Lucky Me.” she mumbled. The way she said my name gave me chills almost as if she knew something I didn’t but should have.
“Wait! That’s not FAIR!” I cried. I couldn’t have detention. Not today, it was the night of the sleepover I had been planning forever!
‘It’s not FAIR!” the secretary wailed in a nasally mocking voice. “Well here is a lesson of the day, life ain’t fair and it’s never gonna be kid.” She shrieked. Her choice of words scared me as the professional aspect was swept from her voice.
I rushed away from her while trying not to cry. Despite my effort a lone tear streamed it’s way down my face. I glanced at the clock. 1 minute until my 2nd class starts. I had just opened my locker when the classroom doors opened and the kids came bustling out heading towards their 2nd period class.
I was walking up the stairs to History Class for 2nd period when I tripped and dropped my books. I bent over to pick them up and I heard a chorus of laughs as I scurried away.
I plopped down into my chair when I got to the classroom. The teacher welcomed the kids in to class then shut the door.
“Okay kids” she called. “Settle down now”
“Yes Mrs. Newman” replied all of the kids at once. She was a teacher you didn’t mess around with.
“Okay class today we will be talking about Greece” announced Mrs. Newman
“Why do we have to learn about other countries anyway? It’s not like we all plan on moving to Greece when we grow up!” shouted a kid named Zach. And then to his liking the kids started to cheer at his comment
“Zach, see me after class please….and DON’T forget!” whispered Mrs. Newman in a chilling tone. It was worse than her yelling which seems insanely impossible if you ask me.
“Now lets talk about Greek Mythology” said Mrs. Newman as if the incident hadn’t occurred. “The main Greek God is Zeus along with his brothers Hades and Poseidon. Together they are the strongest of the Gods and help the world but when they fight they are deadly to humans and can’t control their temper” she warned.
I had already been fed up with nonsense but this sent me off the edge “ENOUGH!” I shrieked. “They aren’t real! Zeus, Hades, Hera, Hermes, Aphrodite! You name ‘em they are FAKE!” I yelled. “How do you expect us to believe this garbage!” I sobbed now unable to control my feelings.
“Miss Nia you will be visiting me after school for detention” Mrs. Newman roared.
“Sorry but I already have detention with the secretary!” I retorted.
Suddenly lighting flashed and the rain started to downpour. But last I remembered there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. Weird…
The rest of History passed without any more notable events. I then went to Math and then English and finally I was off to Lunch.
I sat by myself at lunch as usual but after about 10 minutes things started to stray away from the normal.
First the rain suddenly subsided as if it no longer wanted to fall and instantly stopped. Then a kid I had never seen sat down next to me. I naturally moved a little farther down the table
“Hey kid, you don’t have to run away! I ain’t going to bite!” he giggled
“Oh um hi” I managed to say without laughing. Now that I looked closer I saw that he wore a shirt that said Recycle: Its Cool on it and a pair of ripped up shorts. His shoes squeezed his feet and his hair looked like it just came out of a hurricane.
“Why so shy” he asked
“Just having a bad day I guess” I replied
“Really? Well it’s about to get much more interesting!” he grinned
“What do you…” but I was interrupted before I could finish my sentence. My vision faded and everything went blurry and black. Then I felt like I was spinning, losing control of my body and traveling to a far off place. The last thing I remember before leaving was hitting my head on the table as the boy grabbed my arm and took me though the blackness.
