Song of this chapter:
What If - Jason Derulo

"It's Skylar." I snapped.

"Well Skylar, Brenda hired me to fix some things around here." Ashton explains, lifting up his goggles to place them atop his shaggy hair. I catch a feeling of insecurity as I watched him look me up and down.

"My Gram doesn't need help from a man-child like you." I scoff, rolling my eyes. For some reason I immediately just didn't like this guy. He gave off a weird vibe. "Where is she anyway?" I ask, running my fingers through my most likely tangled hair.

"A man child like me doesn't answer questions from a girl like you." He fires back, pulling his goggles back over his eyes before turning around to continue his work.

"A girl like me? You don't even know me." I stifle out a laugh.

"I know way more than you think." Ashton mumbles. I was taken aback but before I could say anything else to him, I heard my name being called.

"Skylar!! Is that you, honey?" I turn to see Gram making her way into the garage, looking as happy as ever. "I knew that was your car out there." She exclaims, throwing her small arms around my shoulders for a bone crushing hug. For a 70 something woman, she was indeed strong.

"Yeah, I just thought I'd come down and spend a few weeks with you. It's been forever." I explain, not even trying to hold back my huge smile.

But my smile turns into a frown when the unfortunate sound of hammering pulled me out of my happy state. I forgot Ash- the man child was here. "Oh! Have you met Ashton?" Gram cheerfully asks, tugging me closer to him. "He's been such a dear, helping me around the house and all." She proudly announced, reaching up to pinch his cheeks. The fact that my grandmother completely adores this guy is making me sick to the stomach. I don't know what it is but he just seems sketchy.

"We've met." I shoot a glare towards him. He pretends to not notice it, sending me a smile, his dimples deep in his cheeks.

"That's wonderful. He's been asking about you for weeks." She laughs, clapping her hands

What? Now that's definitely what I'd call sketchy.

"Now let's get you settled in, shall we?" Gram smiles as if she just didn't drop a bomb, grabbing my hand. "That ride must've been long. Come on honey." I force a smile as she pulls me into the kitchen and into a stool leaving Ashton to do his work.

My mind kept wondering to Ashton. I had just met the dude and I already had so many questions for him.

Why hadn't I met him before now?

Why was he asking about me?

What did he mean by 'I know more than you think'?

I was pulled out of my deep thinking as Gram shoved a plate of banana bread in front of me. "Thanks Gram." I smile, tearing off a piece and stuffing it into my mouth. I hold back a moan of pleasure as I chewed and swallowed the master piece that was my grandmother's banana bread. As a kid, Gram's bread was the only thing I'd eat when me and my family came down here. My mom use to have to force any other food's into my mouth because I had refused to eat anything other than banana bread. It was quite unhealthy, but I was a kid and I didn't know any better.

"So, what brings you down here, hun?" She asked sitting in the stool across from me. My mind raced for any excuse to tell her. I hated lying to such an important person in my life, but I don't think Gram would like to know that her only granddaughter was a drug dealer and had to get out of town before someone busted into her house, wanting to hurt her.

"Just needed to get away from Mom for awhile." I shrugged, taking another bite of the bread.

"Is she giving you trouble again?" She sighs, taking her glasses off to pinch the bridge of her nose.

"The divorce isn't even final and she's already had a handful of guys in and out of the house." I shake my head.

"Well you're welcome here anytime, you know that." She gives me a small smile, reaching over to place her hand on top of mine. I return her smile, my mind roaming back to the one thing I really didn't want to think about.

"What do you know about that Ashton guy?" I surprise myself by asking, and Gram by the look of her face.

"Uh he and his 'mates' just moved in down the road about a month ago from Australia." That explains the accent. "He just knocked on the door one day, asking if I was looking for any help.It was quite random if you ask me, but he's been a big help." She shrugged as if it was nothing. I loved that Gram was so care free. I would never in a million years let an Australian stranger come into my house, even if he offered help. "He's a sweet boy once you get to know him. You'd like him."

"Gram." I laughed, shaking my head. "Man child is definitely not my type."
