Hidden beneath the waves

Chapter 2

Michal took away his hands from my waist and threw them around my neck. I returned the gesture and we stayed in the warm embrace for a while. I pulled away and our eyes locked. I missed his features just as much as his personality. He had gorgeous green emerald eyes, a light brown quiff and a shaped jawline. I then looked at his strong and sculpted torso which almost crushed me just moments ago.

"How have you been Brooklyn?" He asks,his eyes glinting with curiosity. "Great, what about you?" I question still not able to wipe the goofy smile I have off of my face. "Much better now that I'm here, it's been too long". I nod in agreement with him.

Me and Michal met each other when we were four and have been the best of friends ever since. We always used to go up onto the shore together and sneak around with the other kids from our pod. However two years ago his family moved over to the coast of California, therefore he changed pods and I haven't seen him since. We've talked via a conch almost every week and his here for his job along with a few other mermen until the end of Saturday.

"You ready to go?" He adjusts his bag onto his back. I pick up mine and pull the straps over my shoulders. "Yep I'm ready" I say popping the p. I open the door and yell out a goodbye to the merfolk in the house. I get a few waves and goodbyes and then close the rock and coral structured door.

As soon as we start swimming I take in the beauty of the reef. It's always gorgeous and lively during the summer, it's atrocious that the humans are polluting the ocean. We swim through the entrance of a cave and I start up conversation again. "So are you excited to go back to your main job?" I nudge him jokingly. He lets out a small laugh. "I'm so thrilled my scales are shining" he replies sarcastically. We both laugh and continue talking until our stomachs hurt from all the laughter.

We arrive at a deserted beach not far away from the boardwalk. We both swim separate ways seeing as neither of us want to see each other transform. Us merfolk aren't used to having human body parts, if you get what I mean.

I swim behind a tree and cast a song spell changing me into human form. I cast another to dry off the items in the bag. I then start putting on my packed clothes. I end up in some shorts, a black muscle tee with ying and yang on the front, a black bandeau and some silver sandals. I then put on some black sunglasses, concealer and lipbalm.

I step out from behind the tree and see Michal standing there with his arms crossed in front of him. "Took you long enough" he remarks with a big smirk on his face. "Sorry mikey did I make you impatient" Remembering his childhood nickname. I start walking towards the concrete path. I hear his footsteps behind me and the second I turn around he picks me up from the waist and flings me over his shoulder. I start punching him in the back. "Put me down asshole!" I scream at him. He just laughs in response and starts running me to the boardwalk.

We get there in around ten minutes and he finally puts me down. "Took you long enough" I say pulling down the edge of my top mimicking what he said earlier. "Sorry princess but your like a turtle on land." I turn my head in his direction and gape at him. "You better take that back fishboy" i state in a challenging tone. "Or what turtle?" He has a massive smirk planted on his face, which I'm determined to get rid of.

I look around to check no ones watching and lift up a massive ball of water from a nearby pond. I splash it at his back and just stand there smirking. "Well look who became a bitch while i was gone" he says whilst flicking the water off his hands. He casts a song spell to dry himself off. "That was payback for carrying me like a sack of kelp" I just smile at him whilst he returns one back. "I guess I kind of deserved that" he says letting out a little laugh. I nod back at him. "Well come on let's not waste anymore time, i want to check out the rides!" I yell running up the steps of the Boardwalk.

After a crapload of carnival food and a whole lot of rides (my favourite was something called the dizzy wizz), we started towards the exit. "And I was all like, miss I honestly had no idea my powers could do that" Michal said explaining a teachers utter fury at his magic. "And what happened when the explosion cleared? I asked through spurts of laughter. "She ended up with swamp green hair" at that point we both burst out into laughter, sounding like overgrown seals.

"Hey there Brooklyn" my head snapped up at the girl standing in front of us. She was 5'6 so she was a few centimetres smaller than me. "What do you want Chelsea?" I snapped at the werewolf in front of me. Me and Chelsea have been enemies since grade six and Michal isn't too fond of her either. I go to a school that has all different types of creatures in it.

"I was just going to ask who your friend was. He looks awfully familiar." She replies fluttering her eyelashes like she's having a seizure. "Does the name Michal ring a bell, Chelsea?" Michal replies with a scowl on his face. "Oh your the one who left in grade 8 aren't you?" I was trying to hold myself back from laughing at her pathetic flirting attempts. "Yeah I am" he states coldly. "We'll we're having a party at ten tonight in the Gumwood Forrest, you can come if you like." Chelsea hands him an invitation. He takes it and pulls a sickeningly sweet smile. He starts ripping it up. "I'd rather become shark bait, but thanks anyways" he states. We both walk away smirking and leaving her there with her mouth dropped open.

Once me and Michal arrive back at my house I find my mum in the hall way. I swim up to her and give her a massive hug. "Mum! How was work?". I look up at her and she has an uneasy expression on her face. "Mum, is everything okay?" I try to keep the worry out of my tone but fail. "Michal would you mind if me and Brook just had a little talk for a moment" my mum asks him. He nods in response and as I turn to ask him if he knows what's going on. He just shrugs his shoulders in response. I swim down the hall to the lounge room.

I settle myself on one of the soft coral chairs, my gaze never leaving my mum as I watch her float down. "Mum what is it? You're scaring me" I knot my eyebrows in confusion. She takes a breath and I think I've gone insane as she says "honey you're moving to California on Wednesday".
