Sam looked out the car window, clutching her Pikachu doll. Littleroot Town didn't seem like much...not at all like her old hometown of Lilycove City. Whereas Lilycove was huge and busy, Littleroot seemed to be small and quiet. And that didn't seem quite right.
Sam slumped down in her seat and looked away from the sights. She frowned and glared at her mother.
"You can grump all you want, Samantha," said her mom. "We've already moved here, whether you like it or not."
Sam glanced up at the front. In front of their car was a large moving van. Mother and daughter moved from Lilycove City to Littleroot Town to live a little bit closer to Sam's father. He was Norman, the Petalburg City Gym Leader, and had been the gym leader there for the past two and a half years.
Sam loved her dad a lot, but did that necessarily mean they had to live this close to Petalburg?
Her mother certainly seemed to think so.
"It'll do us a lot of good, Sam," her mom had explained. "You'll get to broaden your horizons."
"Humph," was all Sam had said.
She could quote 'broaden her horizons' unquote while still in Lilycove. After all, she had turned twelve just last week and had been ready to pick out her first Pokémon. Sam and her best friend, Charlotte, had both been ready to choose their starters. If one didn't live around the same general area as a Pokémon Professor, they got their starter from a Nurse Joy at a nearby Pokémon Center.
And now, until they got settled into their new home, Sam had to wait to get her starter Pokémon. This move sucked on ice!
The moving van drove into the driveway of a house. Sam's mom parked the car right in front of the house.
"Well, this is it," her mom announced. "Our new home."
Sam looked up at the two-story stone building. It had a teal roof, with a weather vane shaped like a Pokémon that Sam had never seen before. She didn't even know what its name was...and Sam knew the name of just about every Pokémon in the Hoenn region!
Sam and her mom got out of their car. The two movers that had been in the moving van got out. One of the movers released three Pokémon, and the other mover released two. The Pokémon from the first mover's Poké Balls were a Machop, a Machoke, and a Machamp. The other mover's Pokémon were another Machoke and the other was a sloth-like Pokémon that Sam knew as Vigoroth.
The Machop, Machoke, and the Machamp were all gray, muscular, and had red eyes. The Vigoroth had white fur and a teardrop-shaped tuft of red fur on the top of its head. The movers led their Pokémon to the van and the Pokémon helped the movers get the things out and into the house.
Even though she didn't want to seem fascinated by anything here, Sam watched the proceedings. The five Pokémon were very interesting. Maybe, once she went on her journey, she would catch these Pokémon. They looked like they would be pretty good battlers.
Sam's mom turned to her daughter. "Why don't you go and look around the town, Sam? It might take a while for the movers and their Pokémon to finish up with the house."
Sam shrugged. "Okay," she said. She handed her Pikachu doll to her mom and walked down the street to view Littleroot Town.
As she walked down the road, Sam didn't notice a shadow from the sky flying through the air, pausing momentarily to look down at her. Then it made itself invisible and passed on.

Far away from where Sam was walking from, a boy and a girl played with three Pokémon. The boy, who had semi-spiky black hair, was playing with a green reptilian-like Pokémon. It had a dark green tail, a red throat, and stomach, and had yellow eyes. The girl, whose dark brown hair was in a plait, was playing with two other Pokémon. One was a small, blue Pokémon, with orange star-shaped gills on its' cheeks and an orange fin on top of its' head. The other was a red-orange Pokémon that looked like a chick.
"We get to have one of you guys today," the girl told the two Pokémon she was playing with. "Today will be the start of our Pokémon journey. Still hard to believe that we'll be starting them."
"Yeah, well, it helps when you have a Pokémon professor for a dad," the boy said.
The girl nodded in agreement.
The red-orange Pokémon ran around and around in circles, a smile on its face. "Torchic, torchic torchic!" it chirped.
The green Pokémon joined the chick-like Pokémon, chasing it playfully. The blue water Pokémon watched the other two, then after a moment, it decided to join them in the chase. The siblings smiled as the three Pokémon kept running around.
As they watched the Pokémon, their father, Professor Birch, ran out his lab's front door. Brother and sister looked up from the Pokémon they were playing with as they noticed him.
"Hi, Daddy," the girl said. "What's wrong with you?"
"I just thought of something to do with my research," he said in a rush. "I need to take the Pokémon with me really quick."
The two siblings glanced at each other and smiled in amusement. They were both used to their father's somewhat erratic behavior. Without a word, the two returned the three Pokémon into their Poké Balls. All three Pokémon frowned unhappily as they were put back in their balls. The professor grabbed the three Poké Balls, quickly stuffed them into his brown bag, and ran off.
