Chapter 4

He turned to the boy and asked him where he got the note. "A small hooded man on a dark horse gave it to me, he said it was urgent." He walked away from the two, hitting the note thoughtfully against his palm. It was probably a trap, no two ways about that. But it could also be a clue and he couldn't pass up the opportunity to get the artefacts before the earthbound did. With the sword safe in Canaan's hands there were two more weapons forged by the angels, a spear and a bow. The earthbound would love to get their hands on one of the few weapons that can seriously injure and kill them with ease. Well, not of he had anything to say about it. He crushed the note in his hand and held it tightly within his fist. Just when he was about to leave a voice stopped him.

"Drae! Wait!" Devon run up to him with a bright smile and a flushed face. "I signed up for training. They said we can start in two days!" She squealed, excited and practically jumping up and down. "Oh that's great," he replied. She frowned at that. "You don't seem alright, is something wrong?' she asked. He shook his head rapidly and laughed shakily. "Of course not, nothing's wrong. I'm just tired that's all so I'm going home to rest. Why don't you just stay here a while and get acquainted with those you'll be training with," he said. He patted her on the shoulder and turned to leave. "Drae!" She called after him and looked over his shoulder. "Please be safe." He smiled. Guess they knew each other too well.

As he walked, he begun to formulate how he would put his plan into action. No one just walks into that cave and comes out functioning normally. Some came with fewer limbs that they entered, others completely lost their minds. It was not the right place for the fainthearted...and that's what intrigued him even more. He waved at a bunch of girls that were standing in the corner whispering. He gave them a small smile and they giggled in delight.

He decided that the best course of action would be to go to the Evergreen. Maybe the tropical scent of the forest would help clear his head, notwithstanding the fact that the cave lay within the darkest parts of the forest. He went to an old tree that he used to climb when he was younger and stroked it bark. "You've grown old, my friend," he said to it and begun to climb. He tested his weight in the branch before settling on it. "But you're still strong." He leaned against the trunk of the tree and noticed a small grey and white bird on the nearby branch. It was a mockingbird. He tried to get its attention but it ignored him. He suddenly had an idea. He remembered the legend from long ago about the forbidden love between an angel and a demon. The story was recited in the form of poetry and seemed to have a magical spell on it that was so powerful even the animals of the forest felt it. He had no idea if the legend was true, it was hard to believe that an angel who was supposed to be pure of heart and a demon who didn't have a shred of purity in him could fall in love. Unless of course some way somehow, the angel had a bit of corruption in her and the demon...was not as evil as he was supposed to be.

In the beginning there were no humans

Few beings were on earth, few lived with the suns

In the heavens, the purest of breeds

Bearing the Holy Cross, they did succeed

Down below, the vilest of vile

Their hearts enriched with venom and bile

He sung softly but he still caught the bird's attention. It flew to the branch he sat on but didn't get close.

In the beginning, there were angels and demons

Each to his own kind, each bore their own sons

Then one day an angel fell from the sky

Her wings were injured, she could not fly
