Flashback: How We Promised
I rolled my wheel-bag behind me as Harry carried my duffel bag. Our free hands were intertwined tightly. I was headed for my flight to Los Angeles for university. God, I was going to miss Harry badly. I don't think I'd be able to do anything relevant to my life without Harry being with me. I've spent the past three years with him; will I be able to spend three without him? It seemed impossible—not even imaginable, even.
We weren't uttering a single word to each other. I don't think we would until last minute. I felt that if I did say something, I'd end up bursting into tears—and I felt that all that really mattered was that we were holding hands. I was on the verge of crying, really. But I didn't want to ruin anything by crying. It wouldn't make this goodbye memorable.
The flight left in ten minutes, and we seriously needed to start saying something before we regret not saying anything. So with a heavy heart, I decided to finally say something about my farewell, and about the three years wherein we wouldn't see each other everyday and hold hands everyday and hug everyday and say goodnight at the same time everyday and how it would never be the same.
"I'll really miss you," I said quietly. Harry dropped my duffel bag on the ground and placed a hand on my chin, lifting my head up so we'd meet each others' gaze.
He closed his eyes for a moment, and then he opened them, and then he said something I would never forget, "Listen, Rachelle. One day—which is today—we'll have to go separate ways for college. We'll have to communicate through messages and video calls and it won't really be the same. Things will be different. But also, one day, we'll get to see each other again and it will be the happiest feeling ever. The wait won't feel so dreadful anymore. We'll get to live the dreams we want to achieve and it won't really be the same, either. Things will be different. But whatever difference it is, be it the sad one or the much better one, I know we'll get through it. I know we will." He said, and his reassuring statement made my heart melt into a thousand pieces.
I smiled, and he did too. And I hugged him tightly right away, not wanting to miss a moment. "I'll need you to send letters. If not, I won't be sincere to you or anything. I'll send you my exact address as soon as I get there. Plus, I'll hate you if you don't. And trust me, you don't want Rachelle Oliver to hate you. That's hell," I said. And Harry laughed through the hug.
We both pulled away slowly. We only had about five minutes left before the plane would begin boarding in passengers. "Okay, so we have about four minutes, let's make a few promises," Harry said, sitting down on the airport floor awkwardly. I laughed at him and sat down as well, not understanding what his point was.
Harry smiled at me and took both my hands in his, "So, I promise, that when we both graduate, we'll be able to open up that bakery somewhere in London or some place else, and we'll live in an apartment and we'll decorate it together." Harry said, "Your turn, make a promise."
I grinned widely, squeezing his hands tighter, "Well, I promise that I'll always be here for you. Even though I'm not physically there, I'll still be there. Like, if you're having issues, I'll be there. And I always will be. For better or for worse," I replied.
Harry bit his lip, "I promise that I'll do my best in school, always. I'll study and hang out with the correct crowd." He said.
"I promise that I'll always... um... reply to your letters." I said, thinking of something to say.
"Flight GC-5788 for Los Angeles, California, USA is now boarding. Please go to gate 4. Again, flight GC-5788 for Los Angeles, California, USA, is now boarding. Please go to gate 4." A voice boomed from the speakers. I sighed and stood up, pulling Harry up with me. I hugged him tightly.
"I love you Harry," I whispered.
He hugged me tightly back, too. "I love you, too. I love you so much, Rachelle," He whispered in my ear as tears began trickling down my eye. "I'll send you letters," He said as I picked up my duffel bag and wheel-bag.
"I'll send them back, too." I said, forcing a smile as I walked backwards.
"I'll do my best in school," He said.
"I will, too." I replied, giving him a reassuring smile.
"I'll always be there for you," Harry told me, giving me a sad smile.
I replied, "And so will I." Before I turned around right away and boarded the plane.
And that was how we promised.
