Chapter Fourteen
~~ ~~
Lindy got up and took her time getting ready for the day after a month of staying with her aunt and uncle she felt like she was finally doing something useful with her time. Ariel had taught her to cook, Laura had taught her to fashion her hair and December was teaching her to make fancy dresses, starting with one they were making for herself which was almost finished.
She was happy to finally be independent. Before it seemed she had been wasting her life waiting on Levi's return secretly hoping he'd make a move and they'd be married but now she had to move on, and even though she missed her family fiercely she knew that staying in Colorado was best for her.
Though she still felt heart broken when she was alone, it was starting to get easier to not think of Levi every day. She had even noticed how attractive Lucas- who worked in the kitchen of the children's home with Ariel and her- was.
He was charming, and fun. Although she had a feeling that he was smitten with Ariel, and that Betty one of the eighteen year old girls still living in the home fancied him. The last thing she needed was to be in their love triangle. Ariel was much like her in not noticing when someone was clearly taken by her. And Betty was too shy to make a move, Lindy wanted to somehow help them she felt that if she couldn't have a happy ending someone might as well have one.
Aside from work and staying with her aunt and uncle she had also gone over to help her older cousins. Mostly Laura as she hadn't been feeling well and much to everyone's relief it turned out Laura was only feeling poorly because she was in the family way... again.
She loved her large family, and she was thankful she had so many cousins when she only had her Uncle Daniel and Aunt December. Her mother had a sister who died when she was only thirteen in a horrid carriage accident that also took her mother's parents. And her father only had one brother, Daniel, their father had left them before they had reached their teen years and their mother died once they were sixteen and eighteen. She was always sad she never got to meet her grandparents but she was happy to have her cousins, and her aunt and uncle.
"Lindy" Abbie said as she ran into the room "I need your help... Please?"
"With what?" Lindy asked surprised. Abbie had barely had time for anyone besides Michael since she got there.
"Well I promised Arrie and Mama that I would help them tonight with a fundraiser to raise money, that Arrie put together... but I forgot that Michael and I had plans, he's going to take me to a play!".
"Abilene! You can't just go back on your word."
"Belinda honestly! All you need to do is take a picnic basket full of a lunch you've made and help Ariel with it."
"Abbie-"
"Please, Lindy haven't you ever been in love?" Abbie asked "I just want to spend every moment I can with him!"
"Why not bring him?"
"Michael doesn't want to go..."
Lindy sighed "Alright, But Ariel isn't going to be happy about this you know."
"She'll understand once she's in love" Abbie said dreamily "It's the most wonderful thing..."
"Abbie, Love is wonderful yes but I don't think it's necessary that you turn your back on your family... I think you need to have a talk with Aunt Em."
"Mama doesn't need to know, don't tell her please... now if you'll excuse me I need to go Michael's probably waiting for me."
Lindy rolled her eyes; she wasn't sure what to do. She loved Abbie but she didn't love the way she was acting, Lying was one thing she could not stand for.
