Chapter 5 : An Apology
"Jace, I know what I did was so stupid, and... and... I endangered people's lives. The guilt was eating me alive. I felt it weighing me down." Katelyn whispered, tears rolling down her naturally pink cheeks. "You didn't do a damn thing about it, though." Jace muttered, sitting back on the couch. "I know, and I feel stupid. I felt like an idiot. I should have told them it was me, but it was too late--" Jace stopped her. "It wasn't too late. You had the time at the court, you had the time at the police office, and you had the time when the police even came to your house!" Katelyn wiped her eyes. "I know, I know! If I could do something now, I would do it. I wish I could go back and change everything; you wouldn't have to have gone through that at only eight years old." Jace ignored her and kept rambling on. "Do you know what it was like? To go to jail at such a young age, to keep your head down for years because people were spitting and cursing and calling you a murderer? To lose all your friends and your family members and then you have no one? Being alone, do you know how it feels? It feels like shit," Jace breathed out. "Do you know what it's like to have your own parents to not trust you anymore? My parents freaking hate me, and you don't give any!" Jace shouted, knocking over the lamp next to him. The room went eerily dark and quiet as the light blew out. Katelyn now broke down. She began crying loudly. "Hey, hey. Stop crying," Jace said softly. It tore his heart in two to even imagine what she looked like. Jace ignored the angry tears in his eyes and felt his way around the room, reaching out for Katelyn. It bothered him seeing anybody crying. He remembered his parents at that day in court, Jace remembered their faces. They looked horrified. Tears ran down both their faces. He looked to the right of him, where Kerry and her father were. They held onto each other tightly. Kerry burst into tears and the judge made her guards escort her out. A single tear rolled down Jace's cheek and he wiped it away quickly. I hate you, he thought, but kept looking for Katelyn. He finally grabbed onto her and Jace pushed his body against hers. He hugged onto her tightly, whispering in her ear. "Don't cry," He whispered over and over again. The tears just kept coming. He sat down on the couch, pulling Katelyn onto his lap. She wrapped her hands around Jace's neck and buried his face in the crook. He felt her breathing on his neck and it sent shivers down his spine. He just held her as she cried, enjoying yet hating the moment. He didn't like when Katelyn cried. It made him want to cry. He held onto her tightly rubbing her leg in a friendly gesture. "Don't worry, it's over. I forgive you, I forgive you." Jace whispered, kissing Katelyn's forehead and running his free hand through her long hair. "Thank you so much," Katelyn said before crying again.
