Six Years Later...

Janet's Pov.

I run to the gate and trip over a rock. "Ow!" A big shadow covers me and I look up and smile. "Uncle Huey!"

Uncle Huey has big hair. I like his hair! One day my hair will be like his. He picks me up and carries me.

"You should be more careful, Janet," he says.

I stretch my arms and play with his curls. He walks over to the bench, where mommy and daddy is.

"Aye Huey! Bout time you made it," Daddy says.

Uncle Huey puts me down and I sit down next to mummy. She pats my head. "Hey, Huey. Where Jazzy at?"

Uncle Huey sits down across us. "Work. I swear she works too hard."

"Don't worry, Huey. She'd complain if it were too much," Mummy says.

I look at my mummy and pull one of her braids. She sees this and smiles, but ignores me. Mummy's hair is long and yellow, she likes braiding it.

"Heeeeeeyyyyyy mah niggas!" We all turn. Uncle Scissor and Aunty Ming walk to us. Aunty Ming carries a basket. I hope it has cookies. I like cookies.

"Yo yo yo! Wassup?" Daddy greets. Daddy stands up and he and Uncle Scissor do a funny handshake.

"Hey baby girl," Uncle Scissor ruffles my hair. I laugh. I like it when he does that.

"Hi Janet. How are you?" Aunty Ming sits down on the opposite bench.

"I'm fine," I say.

Aunty Ming sits next to Uncle Scissor and they holds hands. They put the basket on the table. I reach out for it, but Daddy stops me by taking my hand. "Not until everyones here, baby."

I frown. I love my Daddy, but he sucks sometimes. He makes me cool at school because he's a ganga...a ganster. Yeah. That's it. I like the way he talks, mummy talks like that, too. Soon I'm gonna talk like that, Uncle Huey said I shouldn't though.

Uncle Scissor also talks like that. But different. He talks differently, I like it. Mummy told me its Jamaican. Its called an ac..an ac..acsssent. Accent! He also has long twisted hair.

Aunty Ming is Chinese, she does karate! She said she'll teach me when I'm big. She has long black hair and brown eyes.

"Hey everyone." I turn my head and grin. "Hi Aunty Jazzy!"

Aunty Jazmine walks to us. She is very pretty. She has long curly hair and green eyes. Mummy says my hair will be like hers since we both mullatos. She wears a long white dress. She smiles a pretty smile.

"Hello beautiful," she hugs me. I like it when she hugs me. She smells like strawberries. She has a very big stomach. Crazy big. She sits down next to Uncle Huey and they kiss.

"So what are we waiting for? Lets eat!"

Mummy lays a blue and white checkered cloth on the picnic table. The others take out bowls and dish out food on paper plates.

"Shit. Riley I told you to pack the ketchup," Mummy says.

Daddy makes an annoyed look. "Wut you talkin about? Bitch you was supposed to pack it."

"Guys! Language!" Aunt Jazmine whisper-shouts and nods towards me.

"Chill. We talk like that around her all the time. She still innocent and shit," Daddy says.

Mummy rolls her eyes.

"For now. You guys should really watch what you say around her," Uncle Huey says.

"Aye. She half black. Its in her blood anyway," Daddy winks at me. "Tell Uncle McHater where you from baby girl."

"The hood nigga!" I say with a giggle. Daddy told me to say that. Mummy rolls her eyes again and Uncle Huey shakes his head.

"Its too late," he says. "They've already influenced her."

"If ya'll niggas are done with talkin about language, can we eat?" Uncle Scissor asks.

Mummy gives me a plastic plate with a sandwich on it and a carton of apple juice. "Here baby."

"Thank you."

The whole afternoon we talk and eat. We don't always have picnics. Aunty Jazmine winces and touches her tummy.

"You Ok?" Uncle Huey asks.

She nods. "I think the baby kicked."

They exchange smiles.

"There's a baby in there?" I ask.

"Yeah."

"Is it a boy or a girl?"

"A boy, sweetheart. He's gonna be your cousin. Your little cousin."

I look up at Daddy. "I'm gonna have a cousin?"

"Yeah...look who didn't use a condom now..." he mutters the last part.

Mummy glares at him and elbows him in the ribs. "Ow! Bitch-" He glances at me. "Nevermind."

After looong time...

"We should do this more often," Aunt Jazzy says to Mummy as she sits in her car.

"Yeah. It was fun. Are we still on fo lunch?" Mummy asks.

"Of course. I'll see you tomorrow."

I walk away from them (bored of their conversation) and listen to Uncle Scissor and Daddy. "Have fun man. I'll see you next week," Daddy says to Uncle Scissor.

"You too. And hey, wish me luck. I heard Ming's dad is a little...rough."

Daddy laughs.

I get bored of their conversation and go to Uncle Huey whos packing away his basket. "Uncle Huey?"

"Hm?" he says without looking at me.

"Are you leaving now?"

"Yes." He closes the boot.

"How come I never see you?" I ask.

He looks at me with a scowl. He always scowls. "I work."

I get an idea. "Can you visit this weekend?"

"What?"

"Pleeeeeeaaaaaaaaasssse Uncle Huey!"

He sighs. "Ok, Janet. You should ask your mum."

I hold out my little pinky. "Pinky promise?"

He squats so were eye-levelled. Turns out I'm really short for a six year old. I think I get it from my mummy. He twists his pinky around mine. "I pinky promise."

I smile at him and he smiles back. I gasp. "You smiled!"

He doesn't stop. "I guess you just bring that out in me..."

Just like Jazmine...
