I ran downstairs letting the smell of remains from the golden retriever remind me to watch my step."AMANDA hurry!"
Amanda was scooping them with a dust pan while spraying febreze in her other hand. Reading that sentence must have sounded normal, Right? Amanda looked utterly ridiculous trying to multitask, as she usually does when she's panicking.
I met up with her parents right before the front door opened. I quickly closed the door behind me.
OH GOD what do I do what do I say??
"Hey Johnathan! Christine!"
I literally called them by their first name. This is a bad start.
Amanda's father's eyes lit. He wasnt especting me to be here.
"oh..Jamie? Mandy didnt say you were coming over." he began to grab the door knob and i panicked.
A vision of horror ran across my face just imagining what would happen if my parents Came home to a extremely dirty house with shit everywhere. Literally.
"Jamie, are you okay?" Amanda's mother face turned from relaxation to concern.
"Uh..."
"No."
"No not really"
"Can I talk to you guys?"
***
"And now she's terrible! She's got these impulses that she needs to fix things that don't need to be fixed. It's like one thing bothers her and she tries to fix it but the situation becomes worse. She can't resist it."
The sound of a dog barking elevated from the stairs.
"Is that a dog?" Christine is getting onto me.
"No, she also barks while she fixes things."
"That sounds like an actual dog..."
"Jamie..is there something you aren't telling us?" Johnathan crosses his arms.
I give up.
I put my hand on the door knob. "Brace yourselves." I open the door and it's makes the squeakiest sound a door could make. They really need to get that fixed.
Now isn't the time Jamie.
The kitchen had a scent of vanilla and tropical fruits.
"Amanda?" Her mother called for her.
She comes running down with yellow latex gloves and a sponge in her hand.
"Oh Hi mom. Dad! I was just cleaning.." She forces a smile.
"Oops missed a spot!" She runs over to a brown stained piece of wood and rubs the stain out heavily.
Her parents turn to look at me.
I mouthed the words, "she's getting worse."
"Amanda we need to study for that chemistry test on Friday?..." this was code for and now we gotta get rid of the dog upstairs that caused this problem in the first place.
"We have a chemistry test?"
"Yes." I wasn't lying. We actually do have a test o Friday... consider it a white lie.
"A..Amanda honey are you okay?" Christine began registering what I've told her.
"Yup! Just peachy!"
Yeah, just like the scent of febreze in this room.
"Mandy if you're having any problems you can always talk to me and your mother. You know that right?"
