Chapter 3
As Brooke stepped out of the bus, she was imideatley surrounded by her usual friends: Racheal, Christie, Liam, and Parker.
"Hey, Brooke!"
"How you doing?"
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!"
"Oh my god, it's your birthday? Why didn;t you tell me?
"Of course it's her birthday, you douche! How could you not know?"
"Guys, guys! Let the girl breathe! Back off!" yelled Racheal.
Brooke blinked. She was astounded by the horde of hooligans who were her best friends who had just verbally attacked her.
Shooting a thankful glance at Racheal, she said "Thank you for wishing me a happy 16, but it would be a wonderful birthday if everyone didn't make such a big deal about it,"
Parker, Christie and Liam snickered, giving each other knowing glances. What was up with these people today? Why was everyone so mysterious?
"Ok, ok, we're sorry," Liam said.
"Thank you," Brooke answered, and started stalking toward her lockers, her friends trailing behind her.
"Is she really that clueless?" she heard Racheal whisper to Parker, who whispered back, "affimative", which was his new favorite word.
Hmm.
Brooke opened her locker, and put her books in her backpack, and joined her friends at their lockers.
"So, Brooke, what are you gonna do for your birthday?
"I don't really wanna have a party, so i was thinking we all could just go watcha movie or something. With Will of course," Brooke said, glancing over at Will, who was surrounded with cheerleaders and his other buddies, including Nick.
"What? No Sweet 16?" gasped Christie, who was by far the most stylish one in their group.
"Nope, i don't think so. My mom had a cow about it this morning, but it's my brithday, after all," Brooke replied.
"Yeah, good luck with that," Liam whispered to Christie, who chuckled knowingly at Brooke.
Having a short temper, this made Brooke snap. "What IS it with you guys today? Everyone's acting weird,"
"Ohh, it's nothing," answered Racheal, just as the bell rang.
"Saved by the bell," Parker whispered to Racheal.
Shooting them suspicious glances, Brooke went to Algebra.
"Good morning class," said Mrs. Short, their very uptight teacher.
"Good morning, Mrs. Short," the class answered in unison.
"Now, get out you homework. Today we will be reviewing it and continuing on to a new lesson which will cover...." she droned on and on , and Brooke found it very hard to concentrate. She kept wondering why everyone was acting so odd today.
********
She was jolted out of her thoughts when the bell rang, signaling the end of 3rd period and the beginning of lunch.
Wondering if school could get any more boring, Brooke collected her bag and walked out of her classroom. She was heading toward the cafeteria when she heard laughing coming from the already deserted hallways. No sooner than when she heard it, a rock hard wall collided against her and she was sent skidding down the floor.
"Haha---oh my gosh I'm so sorry are you---" said a deep voice as smooth as velvet. Opening her eyes to check her throbbing ankle, she caught sight of a set of sparkling blue eyes looking down at her. She gasped, not from the pain, but from the shock.
It was Nick.
He bent down to make their eyes level. "Are you ok? I'm so sorry." He whispered.
She nodded, and tried to get up, go anywhere but here. Unfortunatley, her legs seemed to turn to Jell-O and her legs crumbled benath her. Just in time, Nick caught her by the waist, sending tingles up her spine, and stared into her light violet eyes.
She turned to walk away, trying yet agian to escape, but wincing when her left ankle cracked. He caught her again, but this time, her chuckled. "What's the big rush?" he breathed into her ear, making her shiver involuntarily.
A throat was cleared, bringing Nick's attention back to his companion, the head cheerleader, Leah. She was a pretty blonde who every girl in the school envied because of her perfect figure and good looks, and also because she had literally every boy in the school drooling all over her.She was also the school's biggest slut, the typical cheerleader. She was basically a female version of Nick, who also had blue eyes and blonde hair and was the most popular boy in school (besides Will).
"Uh, Nickie? You wanna still go, or...?" she asked in the squeakiest voice Brooke had ever heard.
Nick was startled, tearing his gaze awat from Brooke, and glancing back at her. "Uhh, I can't sorry, i think I have to take Brooke here to the clinic. She hurt her ankle," he explained.
"Aww, come on! Beth is a big girl, she can take care of herself!" Leah pouted.
Exasperated, Nick scoffed. "It's Brooke, Leah, and no she can't, I need to walk her. I'll catch up with you later,"
"Fine!" Leah huffed, and stalked away back to the cafeteria.
Shaking his head, Nick turned back to Brooke. "Come on, Brooke," commanded, putting his arm aroound her shoulder, giving her support. But Brooke shrugged it off, and put on a scowl on her face.
"No thanks, I'll walk myself down to the clinic, you go back to her," she said acidly, with a nod toward the cafeteria.
"Still the same," Nick muttered under his breath, and scooped Brooke into his arms, bridal style, and started walking towards the clinic.
"Let me go! What are you doing?" Brooke hissed.
"Carrying you. I wouldn't have done it in the first place if you hadn't been so stuborrn," Nick explained, with a slight teasing tone in his voice.
"I wouldn't have fallen in the first place if it wasn't you who came crashing into me!" Brooke exclaimed, frustrated.
"Look i'm sorry for that, and this is my way to make it up to you,"
"By carrying me to the clinic? That's the least you can do!"
"See, now you agree with me carrying you," Nick said, pleased with himself.
It took a moment for Brooke to answer. "Hey, you tricked me!"
She felt his rock hard chest rumble with amusment from beneath her. Crossing her arms and huffing like a little kid, she stared straight ahead, giving up. He was too strong for her to break free, and even if she did, she would fall on her hurt foot, and that would get her nowhere.
After journeying through the mazes of hallways of their monstourous high school, they finally reached the clinic. When they walked in the door, the nurse (Mrs. Ayers) gave a little gasp, followed by a "Good heavens, what happened?" in a southern accent.
Immediatley, Brooke grimaced and pointed a finger up at Nick from her bed, and said, "He did it," at the same time that Nick said, "It was all her,"
"What?!?" both of them said at the same time.
"I'm Just the handsome young prince who rescued a damsel in distress," Nick explained, with one of his killer smiles at the nurse and a hand over his heart.
"Yeah, and I'm a six foot tall sumo wrestler who lives a double life as a sixteen year old girl," Brooke said sarcastically.
The nurse and Nick broke into a chorus of laughter, before straightening up from a death glare from Brooke.
******
"Well, it's not broken," Mrs. Ayers said. "But you do have a minor sprain. You'll need to wear a brace for a week, though, and it'll be good as new,"
"Great," Brooke mumbled "A sprain as a birthday gift,"
"However," the nurse continued. "You can't stay in school any longer. You'll need rest and an ice pack for that ankle," She said with a nod towards her leg.
"But, I have no way to go home," Brooke pleaded.
"No car?"
Brooke shook her head.
"What about you parents?"
"Both are at work,"
"Oh,"
"I'll drive her," Nick offered. Brooke's head snapped to him. She had completley forgotten he was there.
"No, I'll rather stay here," She answered.
"Do I have to carry you again? Cause if i have to, I will," Nick threatened.
"Fine," Brooke sighed, as she limped out of the nurse's office.
"Have a good day, kids!" Mrs Ayers called out.
Everything was fine until they reached the parking lot.
"THIS is your CAR?" Brooke gasped.
