**Sorry for the wait, guys... A bit of writers block with this one >.<**
"Let's get on the road again."
All four boys woke up to Kirstie's unusually eager voice to get them out of their blankets. As they stirred, Kirstie started to pack up the materials they had left out. She had a strange feeling about this place all of a sudden and decided it would be best to hurry up and leave.
"What's wrong, Kirst?" Mitch asked drowsily, sitting up and closing one eye.
"I'm getting an unnatural feeling from this place all of a sudden. I feel like we should leave." Kirstie looked towards him with fearful eyes. Mitch didn't doubt them.
"If there are any more of those lethal creatures..." Scott mumbled as he stirred under his covers. "I mean, except for Bridie! She's the best pet in the world!" He smiled as the tiny snake slithered into his hands.
Even Kirstie was surprised that the snake had chosen to stay with them for this long. She figured it would have run off after an hour or two of being let out of the bag, but she started questioning its true intelligence after it defended them from the rabid creature from before.
"Well, let's head out before the spooky predators come get us," Kevin joked as Kirstie stuck her tongue out at him. They laughed.
The path was empty and everyone wanted to get out of these woods. The eerie tree tops and spontaneous noises from the creatures around them were enough to take away the beauty of nature and replace it with the pain of homesickness and suspense. But, the trees were becoming more spread apart, and the air felt clearer and less humid.
"I think we're finally leaving the woods," Kirstie announced with a smile. She looked back at Scott who nodded and smiled back.
"Thank goodness," Mitch exhaled. "We should stock up on supplies again too at the nearest town. How much money did you all bring? What can we trade?"
"Calm down," Avi interrupted the artist. "We'll be fine. If we spend wisely, we'll have enough to last us for however long it will take us. Plus, Scott has to stay undercover."
Scott sighed at the reminder. Everyone hated that idea, but it was the only way to stay safe.
Suddenly, the birds stopped chirping from the trees around them, and a dead silence suspiciously fell over the travelers. Avi stopped, catching onto the change in surroundings, and looked around for the cause of this difference.
"Avi?" Kirstie questioned, noticing his suspicions.
"Do you guys notice the silence?" he asked, turning to the rest of the group that had stopped as well.
A screech was heard from a nearby tree, and soon everyone could see them. The creature that had attacked them was not the only one, and an entire pack was waiting in the treetops, waiting to attack.
The five humans stood in fear for a moment before Kevin shouted, "RUN!"
All of them started bolting for the edge of the forest, screaming as the creatures dropped from their spots and started chasing them savagely. Kirstie's dress ripped on a bush and she stumbled before regaining her balance. Scott grabbed her hand and led her to the front of the group, followed by Kevin and Avi, then Mitch in the back.
The animals screamed as they crawled after them. Instead of defending them like last time, Bridie hid in Scott's sleeve. There were too many for her to deal with, and the five humans were all helpless.
Suddenly though, two short beings appeared in front of the group, and they halted to an abrupt stop. The creature on the right looked up at the travelers and the familiar face of Thes smiled up at them. Thas, to his right, was staring intimidatingly at the pack of animals behind them, snarling.
"It's good to see you five again," Thes said in his sophisticated voice.
"Vilonodelelod," Thas muttered, glancing up at them with his surprisingly happy tear-streaked face.
"Stand back," Thes ordered, bending his animal legs. "We'll take care of these Ryants."
The five humans huddled behind the two small friends as the creatures, apparently called Ryants, stopped in front of the Thuys. Thas drew his claws that emerged from his paw-like hands like a cat, and Thes reached into a makeshift bag across his chest to grab a small dagger that fit into his hands perfectly.
Kirstie clung to the king for dear life, and Scott held onto Mitch's arm with subconscious strength. Avi and Kevin stood, ready to defend their three younger friends, staring at the Ryants.
"How are you two going to take down an entire pack of rabid animals?" Scott asked desperately. He also found it odd that the herd of creatures hadn't attacked yet.
"It's not just us two," Thes responded, nodding to Thas. He let out a screech to the sky that seemed to shake the trees and leave a strange presence in the five humans' heads.
Suddenly, a flock of high-pitched twittering birds could be heard from behind them, and the unorganized mass of what appeared to be evolved, almost magical ravens flew around them. The loud flapping of wings and whizzing of animals around them caused the travelers to duck and cover their heads in fear of the birds attacking or hitting them. But they all flew with razor sharp precision and never made a wrong move.
"Owelovel golot oforilelonodos tolol," Thas said.
"We've got friends too," Thes translated with a smirk.
The two Thuys charged at the Ryants with forceful speed, and the birds followed. They were intimidating enough and hardly even needed to attack to scare away the vicious creatures. Two Ryants laid dead as the rest fled, and one still attempted to attack the low-flying birds with rabid snorts and screeches.
Scott held out his arm that Bridie had wrapped around, hoping for something to happen again. And almost as if on cue, the small snake snapped out from his sleeve and launched at the animal. It grew in size almost instantly and bared its fangs, letting out a violent hiss. Bridie sank her teeth into its bare neck, causing it to scream an ear-piercing cry, and fall to the ground like the others.
Scott, Mitch, Kirstie, Avi, and Kevin all stared in shock at their pet who had just viciously murdered a creature for the second time. Bridie retreated around Mitch's neck as everyone shifted their attention to the other two in front of them. Thas stared at Bridie with fear and Thes looked in awe at the five of us.
"How did you manage to tame an animal like that? I've never seen it before," the English-speaking one gasped, astonished.
"I kept it in a bag of relaxing salts; I thought it was worth a try," the merchant piped up from behind Scott.
"Magnificent..." Thes muttered, followed by some confusing Leoliadian from Thas. "Well, now you've had a taste of our daily lives, humans. Welcome to the wilderness." And with that, the two mysterious friends bowed to the travelers and ran off into the woods, followed by the countless birds.
Once they were gone, all five friends looked at each other with pleasant shock. Mitch let out a nervous laugh and Kevin sighed a breath of relief. Everyone relaxed for a moment to evaluate what had just happened and wonder how they had never heard of any of this magic before back in Windsor.
"Well, you were right, Kirstie," Kevin laughed. "There was something up with this place."
But Kirstie couldn't respond, because at that moment she passed out.
