I open the door to find my youngest sister, Yevette. "what the hell Vette?! What are you doing here at this hour?!"

"I need help Silas (her deadbeat husband) has been drinking again and I cant take him beating on the kids. He is looking for us now, you have to hide us!" i open the door so that she can come in. she hands me her youngest child. and i take him with open arms. "come in and tell me what the hell is going on."

i lay the kids down in my bed and notice that they all have marks on their body.I examine their marks when the oldest one tells me that their daddy hits them. i instantly heat up with anger. i head back into the kitchen where Yevette is sitting at the table. "Do you want some coffee?" I asked her taking a deep breath. i am not prepared to listen to this. "yes i would love some."  I hand her a mug of coffee and give her milk and sugar to go in it. As we sat in silence sipping our coffee, she finally breaks the silence. "how did your interview go?" "Vette, what the hell does that have to do with you knocking on my door at 2 am with kids who look like they have been beaten!" Tears filled her eyes, she tried to hold them back, but she just couldn't. "i cant take it anymore Sophia! he is drunk all the time, he cheats, he is never home, and now he is beating on the kids!"

"what?!! he is doing what?!"

"you heard me Sophia, don't make me repeat it." i instantly jump up and head to my closet. "what are you doing over there?" "oh just looking for my baseball bat! I've got some ass to kick. If he wants to beat on my family, he has another thing coming right for him and it is the fat end of this baseball bat! that m'fer has me messed up with some other bitch, because i am not the one to be messed with neither is my family. blood is thicker than water!"

Yevette gets up and storms towards me knocking me off my balance. "What the hell are you doing Soph!! killing him wont make it better!!"

"yeah, but it will make me feel a whole lot better! What do you want to do then, just let him beat you and those kids?! Look Yevette, you either do something about this now, and fix your relationship, and by that i mean get out of it, or you can let me and Gloria handle it. you know that she will be home next week and i am sure she would love to kick some ass! especially his!!"

Gloria is our oldest sister who i live with. she is in the military and is away on leave for a few weeks.

"you know what, you have a decision to make here vette, you cant keep running and hiding from him, it is only going to get worse. you need to protect yourself and get out while you can. If you come over here again like this, I will not hesitate to gather up Gloria and we will not stop until he is dead. do i make myself clear?"

"yes, crystal clear."  she said with a mean look in her eyes.

"you are more than welcome to stay here, or i can put you up in a hotel for a few days until he cools down and you are dumb enough to go back home."

"um well seeing how i am getting no where with you, I'll take the hotel." We gather up the kids and get in the car. I take them to a hotel about 20 miles north of Miami and pay for her to stay there for one week. I give her extra money for food and hug the kids good bye. "Remember what I said Yevette. I am dead serious, you need to get your life together and take care of these kids before someone else has to. here is 200 bucks that should be enough for food and gas, and don't even think about getting the money back from the hotel room and going back home."

"i wont, I will stay here and get my self together. But what if he contacts you?"

"honey, you don't worry about me, if my mouth don't scare him, my bat sure will!"
