Ever cautious, Sans kept a careful eye on Frisk throughout the entire expedition, wary of what they might do. However, it seemed like everyone in Snowdin greeted them happily, chattering up a storm; even Papyrus was overly excited about their appearance, set and prepared to jape them.
"PREPARE FOR PUZZLES, HUMAN!" he screamed into Sans's nonexistent ear, though his brother was glad to see him the happiest he had been in years. All of the monsters seemed just as glad to see a new face, too- even the most stagnant of them cracked a smile at the sight of such a child. None of them really knew that they were a human besides the skeleton brothers, though would they really care? Sans was sure they would if they found out, though at least it would shakes things up some; Snowdin wasn't a very interesting place- Sans and Papyrus's shenanigans were one of the only means of entertainment besides the MTT channel.
The first test Papyrus put them through actually went pretty smoothly if Sans did say so himself, despite the fact that Pap' received quite a shock from their success.
Gotta write that one down, Sans thought to himself, making a mental note.
The second created some, albeit small, turmoil between the two brothers. Sans was in charge of putting together this one, and, much to Papyrus's dismay, he had lazily thrown down a crossword puzzle in the snow- not junior jumble, which he argued was much more difficult. They had a disagreement on their hands, not a rare thing for the two to have, that was rapidly solved when they turned to Frisk for consensus; they turned to Papyrus with some hesitation, and eventually chose junior jumble as the more difficult one.
"Nyeh-heh-heh! I told you Sans! Humans must be very smart, so I was obviously right!"
Once he was no longer within earshot, Frisk approached Sans, who proceeded to stop them in their tracks. "Hey, uh... Thanks for going with Papyrus back there to lift his spirits. He could really use the confidence boost, whether he wants to admit it or not." They smiled a small smile in reply, though seemed unwilling to speak; were they up to something, or did they just happen to be nervous? Nevertheless, Sans would remain ever vigilant and keep a close eye socket on them.
As their journey continued, however, he slowly began to let his guard down, though definitely not all the way. Never once did they even attempt to harm a monster, treating everyone with the same quiet (though respectful) demeanor they did with the brothers, and it seemed that Papyrus's excitement for encountering them again grew each time they parted.
The third, and the supposedly final test went less than successful. Papyrus had set up a multitude of obstacles at the bridge near the transition from Snowdin to Waterfall- obstacles that Sans was almost positive the human wouldn't survive. However, Papyrus seemed less than satisfied with the entire ordeal... Especially when he let Frisk go.
"Pap', that doesn't look all that activated..." Sans whispered to him when the prideful skeleton swore that he was about to initiate the assault; Papyrus hesitated, finger hovering nervously over the control. He mumbled something under his breath, and put his jovial mask back on, however, not very tightly.
"Y-You know, the human would easily escape this trap... Maybe we should save it f-for Undyne! After all, flamethrowers and danger are definitely her thing!" With a valiant flick of the wrist, he deactivated all of the obstacles and trudged through the snow away, leaving Frisk and Sans alone in the gentle breeze.
"Heh, I actually think he's warming up to you, but, after all, he is Papyrus." He winked at Frisk, who looked at him like he figured he looked when they had first met.
"Sans..." they murmured tearfully.
"Y-Yeah, kid?"
"I-I'm so sorry..."
They shoved their way past him, leaving him stunned into silence as much as Shyren.
