ALSO HAPPY NEW YEARS

"I am not wearing this!" Calum exclaimed once he walked out of the stuffy bathroom.

The whole Kapa Haka group had come over for a get-together, as they were getting all their costume sizes on. Calum was in the middle of his, as he was the newest member so far.

He wasn't expecting to find everyone waiting outside the door. So once he did, they were already in a fit of laughters.

They pointed and laughed their asses off seeing Calum in a Piupiu skirt. With Anahera's phone flashing a picture of him, his face grew bright red at the image of him in a skirt.

Anahera was waving her phone around for everyone to see, as they all wanted a copy of Calum's horrid facial expression.

"Oi!" Calum barked in annoyance, snatching Ana's phone out of her hands. He looked down at the photo, only to laugh along with the others. He had to admit that he did look pretty ridiculous.

By the time everyone calmed themselves down, Anahera was back to chortling at the photo. And so the cycle of everyone laughing at the thought, grew all over again. It was always that one person who was still giggling at the past, making everyone erupt in laughters.

"Ana! Stop laughing! Your- your making us laugh- with- you!" Paisley said caught in a belly laugh, as she clutched onto her stomach.

"I- can't- help- it!" Ana cackled, grabbing onto Tenei for help.

The sound of the front door opening and closing, had caught everyones attention as they find Niko standing with his arms behind him.

The room had grown quiet, and everyone was staring anywhere but Niko. The news had gone around, about him being high in marijuana and his fist fight with Kiardyn. And especially at the part where his little brother had seen every thing.

One of his eyes had swollen up with a large purple bruise, as he stood frozen. "Can I have a talk with you?" He said directly at Calum.

Calum nodded his head, as they made their way towards the backyard. The sun was hiding in the midst of grey fluffy clouds, as they challenged themselves wether to set out spits of rain or not.

"I was thinking what you'd said yesterday. How I needed to get myself together. And especially how I have to set an example to my brother." Niko explained, as he crossed his arms with furrowed eye brows.

"Yeah..." Calum stated awkwardly, not seeing where this conversation was going.

"And I just wanted to say, thanks..." Niko shrugged his shoulder, not looking at Calum.

"Yeah, it's all good. We have those days-"

"No one has days where they decide to take a few weeds, Calum." Niko looked up, interrupting him. "I can't risk my brother seeing me like that ever again."

Niko had said this quite harshly but Calum didn't care enough to not reply. "Then why'd you take them?"

"Because I can't take it anymore! I can't take the sight of my parents fighting every single night, when my brother and I go outside pretending we couldn't hear them. I can't face reality, when I know that my whole family is dead bankrupt." he blurted out in one large rant.

"I just can't." he ended.

"Then confront them." Calum said simply. "Tell your parents you can't handle it anymore. Tell them that you'll take your brother and live with Koro."

"And how do you know I can live with Koro?" he chuckled sarcastically, not believing that he was hearing this.

"Koro may not seem the most caring person, but he knows when someone needs his help. He is this towns chief."

After Calum's explanation, they both sat there in thought. Calum was thinking how impressed he was on himself for taking this in a mature matter. While Niko felt like he had just heard the best news of his whole entire life.

"You're fucking brilliant!" Niko hollered jumping. "Thanks so much, Calum!" he said before indulging him in one big awkward hug.

"It's okay?" he questioned more than answering, as he patted Niko's back not knowing what to do in the scenario.

As they let go of each other, Niko said one last thing before he went back inside.

"No, really Calum." he turned around. "Not only about your idea. But listening to me. I really needed it."

"So, thank you."
