It was freezing cold out on the field. I think I lost all feeling in my legs. My only thought was I just didn't want to lose a toe or two. The music was a mix of Alessia Cara Here Lucian remix, and G.D.F.R. The only thing keeping me warm was Hayden's jersey. Last year I didn't have one, but the weather wasn't that bad. I will probably break up with Hayden today. But today is Thursday, breaking up on a Thursday isn't good. Guess it'll have to be Thursday. So I smiled and danced. Waved and kissed Hayden between performances.
Smiled some more, and pretended like I wanted to be here. It was a simple equation. After the rally Hayden waited for me outside the locker room. "Hey babe" he said, and kissed me. I pulled away and patted his chest.
"Look, we have to break up" I said.
"W-why" he asked and stepped back.
"You reek of romance. Cheesy take you out on a date with the red roses, and chocolates thing. You are the Lloyd Dobler, the Jake Ryan of it all. The guy, but not my guy" I said.
"Who" he said.
"Exactly what I thought" I said, and left him. Teo waited outside the limo, and I got in. There was a silence in the car.
"Another break up?"
"Can we not talk about this" I said.
"We means you, but this is me" Teo presented like he was a lawyer. "I've seen you do this a thousand times. It could actually be that amount of times-"
"I take that as somewhat of a compliment" I interrupted.
"Listen alright, you seem like after so long you've been breaking hearts that it breaks part of yours. They're aren't the only ones that hurt" he said.
"It's better to a small amount of a broken heart, then a full one" I said.
"What about Auggie" he asked.
"Auggie... he didn't have to see their downfall" I said. "He doesn't deserve that."
"But you do?"
"I don't want to talk about what I think I do and don't deserve. No one should, it's not anyones job" I said.
"Have you asked him how he feels?"
"I do, always" I say.
"What's his answer?"
"That he's okay."
"How are you doing today?"
"Okay" I said.
"That the truth?" I shook my head. Okay was the placeholder to what I wish I felt. How much I wish my life was okay. "That's what I thought." So I just sighed to say I lost, and leaned my head on the glass window. Auggie smiled when I got in the penthouse. So we ate dinner and watched some tv. While watching I thought about before my Dad and Mom got rich, and got this house. That's when it changed.
Every night he would tell me it would get better. That I wouldn't have to worry about food, or clothes. Once it started he became obsessed with providing. My Mom would say that he would need to be in my life at some point. Only we see each other every other holiday. Before when we had less it was like my kingdom. Dad was happiest, and they couldn't be more in love. I would drain the bank now if I had to just to show Auggie what happy parents are.
Once it was his bed time I had to brush his teeth for him. He was going to be extra stubborn tonight. I threw Auggie over my shoulder as I rushed to his bed. "Blast off" I yelled. He laughed when I set him in bed. "Houston, we have landed successfully." I tucked him in and felt Teo's words knock around in my head.
"Auggie how are you doing" I asked.
"Okay" he said.
"You can tell me" I said.
"I feel sad when I don't see Mom and Dad at my games. When I don't have them tuck me in at night. Why aren't they ever in the same room, or here?"
I took in a deep breath "I really don't know" I lied to him. "Now go to bed." The whole time I held my breath, I wasn't breathing normally.
"Riley, I'm thankful for you" he said.
"I am to, just know that we're family Auggie. It doesn't matter what we go through. You can tell me anything" I said.
"I know that, but you already give up so much for me. I don't want to change anything. To worry you" Auggie said.
"Sometimes change is good" I said, and I left the room. So I changed and fell asleep. The next morning I woke up, and put the uniform on. Put another smile on my face. The food was ready, and I ate with Auggie. On the way to school Teo, Auggie, and me talked about our plans for the weekend.
"I have a game to go tonight. And a party also" I said.
"Just text me when you need to be picked up" me and Auggie exchanged a look, and I shimmed my shoulders lightly as I said.
"You tech nerd with your tech terms"I said.
"So ahead of your time" Auggie added batting his lashes. We laughed at Teo.
"I'm only 23" he said. "Plus this is your stop Riley."
I kissed Auggie's cheek and said "I'll be home a little late. Teo make sure he brushes his teeth, and eats his vegetables."
"I'm the driver, not the babysitter" he said. One eyebrow arched at him. "Fine, just text when you need to be picked up." I just nodded and got out the limo. Putting on my book bag. Auggie burst out the car, and gave me one more hug.
I hugged him and circled around. "You are getting way to heavy, and you are going to be late to school" I set him down. "Make sure he says in the car this time" I told Teo.
"Tell that to him" he said. I just rolled me eyes, and did the sign that said I'm watching you. Closing the door I walked to the entrance. Farkle stood with the new kid, Lucas, he slapped Lucas on the back of his head. I just smiled trying to hold in a laugh and walked in.
The day was mostly focused on the game, luckily it came fast. I was cheering them on and saw Hayden staring at me every few minutes. "Did you guys break up" Maya asked.
"Yep" I said.
"Oh sweets" Maya said.
"Not a big deal. He wasn't really my type" I said. "Give me a few seconds" I ran and prepared for a front aerial. My arms lauched up and I kicked my knee up. I spotted the ground, and slid into a split. I got up and cheered "Go Knights!"
We won the game. That meant Bree would hold the party. I changed in the locker room. My outfit was a maroon red racerback top. Black jeans with black boots leather boots that ended to my claves. The top hung a little loose around my waist and hips. Underneath I had a black spaghetti strap top. My hair was half pulled back and half down. A few baby hairs hung down. Maya took me to the party. Once we entered everyone cheered, and raised their cups.
