"I missed you so much." Toby said to Spencer at The Grille. The couple had finally reunited after almost a year and a half of being apart. They couldn't help their conflicting schedules. Spencer had to work all the way in Washington DC. Toby had his job here in Rosewood. They vowed to stay together through it all, and so far they succeeded.

"I missed you too. I can't believe how much Rosewood has changed since I left."

The couple finished their meal and proceeded to take a walk down the streets and reminisce. They walked all the way to the Brew, where they got coffees for themselves before walking up to Toby's loft. The loft was in the process of being packed up, as Toby was planning to move into a house he had built himself. He wasn't going to tell her yet, but he was planning on asking Spencer to move in with him.

"Alison DiLaurentis is working at Rosewood High now." Toby mentioned, his arm wrapped around his girlfriend as they sat on the sofa. They drank their coffees as Toby told Spencer everything that happened in Rosewood since she left. There were a few kisses here and there, but Spencer didn't want to go all the way tonight, as she needed sleep. She needed to be up early tomorrow to help her mother with her campaign.

"Toby, you know I love listening to these stories, but could we talk about something other than Rosewood? Just being back here gives me the chills. Let's talk about... your new house." Spencer said, a giant smile creeping upon her face.

"Well, there's three bedrooms. And there's a nice front porch so you can read your novels and drink coffee every morning." Toby said, remembering how much Spencer loved to start the day with a nice cup of coffee and a book.

"Tell me more," Spencer playfully begged.

"I'm working on the living room right now, and there's going to be plenty of room for a nice, big, Christmas tree."

"Oh! That reminds me... What do you think of spending Christmas in DC? It's so beautiful, and if I get a couple days off from work, then-" Spencer would've continued on, until she swore she heard Toby groan in annoyance. "What?" She asked, suddenly confused.

"Sorry, Spence, but you know I don't understand all your DC, politics talk." He said.

"I don't understand your police talk, but I still listen to you. All I want is for you to listen to me." Spencer retreated.

"Babe, I do listen to you."

"Yeah, when it's about you."

"So you're saying I'm selfish? You're the selfish one, wanting me to go all the way to DC with you."

"I never asked you to move with me. I always have to come down here to a town that still gives me nightmares. Why can't you come visit me?!"

"I have family and a job here, Spencer."

"And I have a job in DC. A job that's far more important than yours."

The fight lasted for another two hours. Things were said by both of them that they didn't mean. It was the worst fight they ever had.

Toby and Spencer both fell asleep on opposite couches, still angry at each other. They still hadn't resolved their argument, and neither one of them showed any effort to forgive the other.

As Spencer awoke in the middle of the night, she noticed Toby sleeping soundly on the other sofa. She immediately regretted the things she said, and crawled into the sofa with him, lying in his embrace.

"We're dysfunctional, aren't we?" Spencer asked as she noticed Toby start to wake up.

"Maybe a little." Toby said, his voice groggy.

"It's not healthy for us to always be apart. We're always going to be fighting."

"Spence, it was just a stupid fight."

"But we weren't wrong. We've grown apart, Toby. Just admit it."

"But I still love you."

"And I'm always going to love you. You were my first love. But we can't always expect this happily ever after."

"Spence-" Toby knew what was coming. He tried to stop her from going there. His heart ached thinking about the possibility of losing her.

"Toby, if we really want things to work out, then it would be best if we broke up."

"You're really going to give up that easily? You're just going to give up on almost four perfect years together?" Toby felt tears brim his eyes. This isn't happening.

"This isn't easy, Toby! But we need time to grow up." This was just as hard for her as it was for him. She had no choice.

"Spencer, please. I want to make this work."

"It's too late."

Spencer walked out of the loft, holding back her tears. She didn't want to do this, but she didn't have a choice. She knew that they couldn't make their relationship work.

She sat in her car, bursting into tears. She hated herself for the decision she made, but she knew it was for the best. If she hadn't done this now, their relationship would've ended in a worse way, like cheating, or an even worse fight.

"Spencer, are you ready?" Veronica Hastings called from outside the barn. Spencer was far from ready. She was still in her clothes from the previous night, and her makeup was ruined from her tears. She hadn't gotten any sleep. Spencer was crouched in a corner of the barn, her head in her hands.

"Spencer?" Her mother called again. Veronica entered the barn, and was shocked to find her daughter in tears. "What's wrong?" She asked, crouching down to Spencer's level. She knew her daughter. It takes a lot to break her. She figured it was being back in Rosewood that triggered Spencer, but she just wasn't happy today.

"Toby and I broke up." Spencer muttered loud enough for her mother to hear.

Veronica was shocked. She didn't like Toby at first, but she saw how happy he made Spencer. She actually believed they'd last. Veronica was clueless as to what she should do. It's not like she could up and cancel her campaign meeting, but her baby girl needed her.

"Spencer, you need to go back to him. Let him know you miss him. You don't have to end things just because you don't see each other all the time. I know that you and Toby can make things work."

Spencer took her mother's words to heart. Toby was always there for her when she needed him. He always put everything second for her. She was his top priority.

Spencer wiped away her tears and made her way to her car. She needed to take him back, even if it was the last thing she did.

Toby decided to seek comfort from his new friend, Yvonne Phillips. They met when Yvonne's house had been broken into, and they became close friends. Toby admired her. She was the first person (since Spencer left) to like him for who he really was.

"Don't let it get to you. I'm sure she'll come around and realize she's making a mistake. Like you said, Spencer's a smart girl." said Yvonne. Toby's heart skipped a beat when Yvonne grabbed his hand. Her skin was smooth and soft.

He tried to stop the feeling within him. Maybe it was because of this newfound loneliness, but he had an urge to kiss her. It was an urge that was hard to fight.

What he didn't care to notice was the other girl standing outside the loft, looking into the window. Spencer.

As Spencer looked into the window, seeing Toby and Yvonne, forehead to forehead, she saw something she hadn't seen in a long time. She saw her and Toby. She saw her and Toby when they were happy. When they didn't have a care in the world and when they would comfort each other when they were sad. Spencer saw Yvonne with Toby and realized that Yvonne could do the one thing she couldn't do. Be there.

Maybe things really were over between the two of them. And maybe, it was for the better.
