My eyes flutter open. I look around. I see Oxford and Tide sleeping on either sides of me. I try to sit up, but it cause agonizing pain in my thigh. Tide and Oxford must've hear me getting up because in no time they are all over me.
"Hey there North. How you feeling?" Asks Oxford
"Oxford when did you get here?!" I ask.
"I heard you and Tide fighting Brites. As soon as I saw her stab your leg, I ran in to help y'all. Brites is dead."
I look at my thigh. It's wrapped up but is bleeding heavily through the medical wrap. That's when I hear the parachute. It come floating down. Tide grabs it and reads it.
"North, it's for you." He hands me the parachute here's what the note said -
Remember that little trick you did I'm your private session that you told me about? Well here's some ember berry jam. Apply it generously to your thigh.
- Avis
I unscrewed the lid to the jam, and put it on my leg. The burning sensation came immediately.
"So how long was I out?" I ask them.
"About three days." Tide replys.
"Who all died in that period of time?"
"Well Maria, Brites, and the girl from eight."
"That's it?!" I ask.
"Yep. So today we need to find some tributes. The sooner they're gone the closer we get to home." Oxford and I both agree to Tides plan. We pack up our stuff and leave our camp. We walk all day long. Luckily that jam healed my thigh. I put the rest of the stuff into my pack, in case we need it again. Suddenly Oxford stops. He listens quietly.
"What is it Oxford?" Tide asks.
"Someones following us." He replys. He walks over to a bush, and stops.
"Amber, you can come out. We aren't going to hurt you." He soothingly says. Out comes a small 12 year old. Oh I remember seeing Oxford with her when we were doing our training. He's always had a soft spot for kids. Amber is from district seven. Her district partner is 16, and a huge threat. He can shoot a bullseye with a bow and arrow from 100 yards away. Oxford invites Amber to be our ally. She agrees and we continue on looking for victims. Although Amber is my age she acts younger. But she isn't useless. For lunch today she gathered us wild plants. At first I didn't eat them, what if she chose poisonous ones. But since Oxford trusted her, I decided I would too. She's very shy and doesn't speak much, but I like her. She seems to innocent and fragile to be in these games. I feel sort of bad for her.
It's probably around noon when we here someone. It's Ambers district partner. He runs at full speed at us. And crashes into Amber. He pins her to the grounds and puts his hands around her neck, and is sucking the life out of her.
"Little sister, I am going to enjoy this moment watching you die." And that's when I remember that Amber was reaped and her brother volunteered, thats when it hits me, this is her brother killing her.
"Oak! Please don't do this! Please, I'm begging you!" She yelps. Oxford is there in no time, he pulls Oak off of her and slams him into the ground. I run over and help Amber up. And then Oak starts screaming!
"Digit! Digit!" He yells. I see the district three boy run up from behind a tree he has a dart gun in his hand. I watch in horror as he pulls it to his mouth and shoots a dart out aiming for Amber. It hits her and she collapses in my arms. I see the dart sticking our of her. It's blue, which means it'll paralyze her in minutes. My ember berry jam can't fix this. I know what I have to do. I hug Amber one last time, grab some berries off a bush that I identify as nightlock, and hand them to her. She understands what I'm doing and puts the berries into her mouth. Her cannon go's off. When I look back up I see Oxford fighting with Oak, and Tide with Digit. I run over to Tide and try to get Digit off of him. Then to my surprise I see an arrow fly right by my face. I turn to find a very bloody Oak holding the bow that shot the arrow, and to make it worst the bow is loaded again. Oxford must've known what he was about to do because he jumped in front of the arrow right as it was about to hit my heart. I fall back in horror of what just happened. Oxford just saved my life. But now he's going to die. I run at full speed into Oak and smash the handle of my knife into his temple. He blacks out for a second, but then trys to get back on top of me. He did not succeed though. I take my knife and hold it at his throat.
"Why are you doing this?! You killed these tributes, you've killed Oxford, and you even killed your own sister!" I yell at him. Then I take my knife and kill him. Then I hear Digit getting off of Tide and running away. I run back over to a dying Oxford.
"Why'd you do that for me Oxford?"
"Because North, it's my time to go. Not yours. I made a promise to your sister before she died that I'd protect you for as long as I could. And I intended on keeping that promise until I died."
"No Oxford you can't go we need you. Here let me get the jam."
"North, no. It's going to be ok. Save it for when you really need it. Well I guess this is goodbye. I'll see y'all on the other side." And then he closed his eyes and just like that he was gone. Another forgotten tribute. I take my hand and close his eyes. Then I step back so that the hovercraft can come collect his body. I will never forget him.Hey guys!
