Ch. 8

“Aunt Helena?” I yell out into the dark house and receive no response. “Auntie?” I yell again and I hear a light shuffle in the kitchen. I walk into the kitchen slowly with Zane following close behind me and peek my head through the entry way.

I release the breath I was holding when I see her sitting at the table with her head in her arms. I can hear her light snoring so I turn to Zane and put my finger to my lips to shush him then begin walking over to her. I put my hand on her shoulder and shake them lightly.

“Hey… Aunt Helena… wake up.” I say lightly. She fidgets for a moment then I hear her light melodic voice enter the room, “Avery?”

“Hey sleepy head.” I say, relief filling my entire body.

“Hey hun. Where have you been? I’ve been worried sick!” she scolds and I smile. It’s good to be home. She runs her hands over her face a couple times and lets out a long breathe that I can only imagine she’s been holding since I called her when the tornado hit.

She looks at me, well finally gets a good look at me without the grogginess fogging her eyes and she gasps. “What in the world happened to you?” she asks.

            “Long story.”

“Very long story.” Zane says from behind me.

“Who are you?” my Aunt asks looking at him with a mixture of fear and apprehension in her eyes.

“My name is Zane.” He says holding out his hand for my aunt to shake. She grabs it unsurely and shakes it lightly, “Helena.” She mumbles.

“We need to talk Auntie, but first I’m going to shower.” I say before turning around towards the fridge. I open it and grab three bottles of water out of the side door and hand one to my Aunt and another to Zane. They both mumble ‘thank you’ and twist the tops off. I’m already gulping mine down hungrily.

Zane moves to take off his jacket and sticks it on the back of his chair; still standing I take it and walk to the front room where all the coats are hung by the door. He starts to protest but I guess thinks better of it. It’s a nice jacket I must say, smooth black leather fitted exact for his body, thick cloth hood, and three pockets with zippers. I run my hands over it to test the smoothness under my fingers and instead feel a recognizable rectangle shape.

I reach into the inside pocket; looking over my shoulder to see if he’s looking, he’s not so I pull out the phone with a wicked smile. I stick it in my bra; look over again, then bound up the stairs to my room. Once in my room I shut and lock the door behind me, I turn on my shower; so not to deter them, or Zane, of my intentions and stick my IPod in the dock.

I sit on my bed for a moment looking at the phone; I really hope there’s no password, and then swipe the little bar over to open the screen. Thank you! A menu pops up and I go straight for contacts; I know she’s not in here but I can get to the dial pad quicker this way. I type in the number I’ve memorized since I met her and wait for her to answer.

“Hello?” she asks wearily, probably from the unrecognizable number.

“Mari!” I pretty much yell into the phone, then hurry to quiet myself knowing Zane has super hearing.
