When Dumbledore awoke he saw that his phoenix had broke free. However, Tom was still under his control. He ordered Tom to march on the great hall, where every child was eating dinner cheerfully, and slaughter them all.
Voldemort entered the hall. he saw himself lifting his arm even though he desperately wanted to stop. After he cast the first curse, however, he started to break free from Dumbledore's killing curse. As soon as he broke free, he felt so much joy that it overloaded the connections he had with each death eater, through the mark, killing them instantly. He quickly broke through the glamours that Dumbledore put on him to make him look uglier. Tom apparated to the person that had saved him, Harry Potter.
