I woke to the light feathery touches of lips against my hand. My eyes fluttered open and I looked at Dan who was holding my hand in his, his lips grazing against my fingers ever so slightly, his eyes closed in a peaceful expression.

"Hi, Dan." I croaked, my voice a lot more gravelly than I expected. Dan jumped and his cheeks flushed pink. He went to let go of my hand when I squeezed it. His cheeks went even pinker and he giggled.

"Hi, Philly."

I let out a quiet chuckle and rolled my eyes.

"Thanks for that."

I sat up and winced, something rubbing against my midriff. I lifted up with shirt and looked at the plaster which now cover pretty much my entire upper and lower torso. I could feel eyes piercing my skin and I lowered my shirt in embarrassment.

Dan cleared his throat. "How are you feeling?"

"Achy." I mumbled, looking up with warm cheeks. "Thank you for coming by."

"I'd be a pretty bad friend if I didn't." Dan said.

I chuckled but winced as a sharping stinging sensation spread through my body.

"Just a small question," I chuckled, ruffling my fringe. "what happened?"

Dan paused, licking his lips.

"Well, you got beat up by the dragon pretty bad. You had mild second degree burns on your waist and shoulder on your right and a mild third degree burn on your calf and thigh. " Dan said.

"Okay," I nodded. "what does that mean?"

Dan chuckled and shook his head. "It just means you burned through the nerve on your leg and not on your shoulders and stuff. My mom refers to all injuries in sorta medical terms since she's a doctor."

"What's it like? In the muggle world I mean?" I asked. "My dad always talks about the muggle world but I never got taken."

I didn't mention that I knew the reason why.

"Well, it's nice. We use the tv for news instead of the paper. We use phones and computers a lot." Dan stuttered, unsure on how to answer my question.

"Computers?" I asked.

"They're basically giant phones with keyboards and more things to do." Dan shrugged, stroking my hand absentmindedly.

"That sounds... unnecessary."

Dan laughed. "It is pretty unnecessary, but they are pretty useful."

"Which do you prefer?" I asked. "Muggle world or wizarding world?"

"No, I can't choose." Dan shook his head. "It's like choosing which child you love more." Dan looked at me intently. "Why didn't your dad show you the muggle world, was he ashamed or something?"

"God no! He loved his home." I shook my head frantically.

"Loved?"

I paused, fiddling with the sheets with my free hand.

"Well his brother—"

"Alright Philip, how are you feeling?" Madame Pomfrey bustled in holding a tray of food and a glass of some murky blue liquid.

"I feel okay, my leg is feeling a lot better than my stomach." I managed a smile.

"Which isn't a good sign." Madame Pomfrey mumbled, placing the tray down and handing me the cup. "You will need to drink this, it'll repair the tissue quicker than just spells. It's going to hurt a little."

I took it gingerly, glancing at Dan before taking a big swig. I coughed and choked as the extremely cold, cold enough to burn, liquid went down my throat, stinging my tongue and numbing my mouth. I yelped and whimpered as pain began to resonate in waves in the spots I was burned but gradually turned into a pounding that ripped through my entire body. I held back a scream and buried my face in my knees.

"Phil?" Dan yelped, jumping on the bed and wrapping his arms around me. I couldn't respond with anything more than a more whimper. He rubbed circles on my back and hushed me softly. "I've got you."

After a bit of time, the pounding turned back to a mild burning and then a stinging and then nothing at all. When the pain finally faded I let out a sigh.

"Are you okay?" Dan asked, his hand still on my back, very close to sitting on my lap.

"I'm okay." I sighed. I turned to Madame Pomfrey. "Hurt a little?" I screeched.

She shrugged and placed Dan's food on my bedside table.

"I didn't want to scare you, you needed to drink that." Madame Pomfrey said before walking off. "Barty told me you need to do the second task."

My jaw dropped and I looked at Dan. His eyes were wide as well.

"Oh speaking of the second task..." he trailed off and reached under my bed. After a few seconds of high pitched moans and grunting, he came back up and placed the golden egg on my lap. "I got it from the tent, they let me get it for you."

I looked from the egg to Dan.

"What happened after I left?" I asked.

"PJ got on late, because he helped you get here. He got some scratches but otherwise he did well. Emma did the same but everyone was talking about you. How did you do the thing with the dragon?" Dan asked.

"I'm not sure," I shrugged. "I just followed my instincts and tried to calm the dragon."

"Well, after dinner everyone is going to want to see you. They weren't aloud to do so before because you hadn't woken up yet."

"Then why are you here?"

"Dumbledore said I could come in."

"And how many other people want to come in?"

"Well..."

Suddenly, a huge crowd of kids from all three schools barged in. I yelped and Dan jumped off my bed. They all crowded around me and were asking things a mile a minute. I stuttered dumbly as everyone screamed at me. I buzzed from one person to the other, trying to see and hear everyone, before a loud voice boomed over everyone else.

"Alright everyone, shut up! Phil Lester just got burned by a god damn dragon! Give him some space!" Chris pushed through the crowd, stepped onto my bedside table and shouted at the top of his lungs. Everyone in the crowd stepped back a few centimeters and I relaxed. "Thank you, children." Chris sighed before turning to me. "We just wanted to say congrats on surviving, you did great. Let's give a round of applause for Phil Lester!" The whole crowd clapped and cheered wildly and I couldn't help but laugh. "And also," Chris scooted closer to me and spoke in a stage whisper. "we kinda wanted to see what was in the egg."

"Yeah, what's in the egg, Philly?" A seventh year yelled from the middle of the crowd.

"Shut it Pewds!" Chris snapped. A shoe came flying at Chris but he caught it and threw it back the student. Chris turned to me with a softer smile. "So, Phil, why don't you open the egg for us." Chris gestured to the egg in my lap.

I licked my lips and glanced at Dan who shrugged. I looked back at the egg and twisted the nob on top and the egg popped open, smoke billowing out. Everyone coughed and I waved my hands to clear the smoke. When the smoke cleared, in the center of the egg was a small pot of thick angry writhing vines of devil's snare.

"ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?" Chris screeched. "YOU GOT BARBECUED BY A FUCKING DRAGON FOR A POT OF ANGRY LEAVES!"

I looked up at Dan who was as white as a sheet.

The crowd groaned and walked away, mumbling good wishes as they left for their dorms. Soon the only ones left int he hospital wing were Dan, Chris, and I.

"Dan?" I asked. "Are you okay?" His eyes were fixed on the pot in my lap. I shoved the pot into Chris's hands and wobbled over to Dan. His eyes were still fixed on the spot and his breathing was growing more and more rapid. "Dan?" The only noise was the sound of the ticking clock from down the hall and Dan's rapid breathing.

Suddenly, he broke down crying. He dropped his head and sobbed uncontrollably, tears running like rivers down his cheeks. He wrapped his arms around himself and sank to the floor into a small ball.

"Please don't hurt me." He whimpered, dropping his head between his knees.

I glanced at Chris, who was paler than a ghost, before kneeling shakily to Dan's level.

"I will never hurt you, Dan." I said.

"He won't ever leave me," Dan said in a defeated tone. "will he."

"I don't know. But I know I won't ever leave you. For as long as you are in my reach I will be holding you for as long as you need me to. Okay?" I stared at Dan with as much confidence as I could muster. Dan nodded, tears still streaming down his face. "Do you want to snuggle with me on my bed?" I asked. He giggled, using his sleeve to wipe his face, and nodded. I winced as I stood and flopped back onto my bed. Dan stood up awkwardly as I scooted into my bed.

Chris cleared his throat and stepped off the bedside table.

"I'm so sorry the evening ended like this." He said. Dan stared at his feet. "can I hug you?" Chris asked. Dan nodded and allowed himself to be engulfed by Chris's lanky arms. Chris let go and waved to us both before leaving. I glanced at the bedside table, the plant sitting there harmlessly. I snatched it in a quiet fury and threw it across the room. Dan glanced at me with wide eyes before smiling and climbing onto the bed. I opened my arms and he snuggled into the crook of my neck. Gingerly, I wrapped my arms around Dan and pulled him closer.

Dan sighed and mumbled someone incoherent into my chest before he began to snore loudly. I glanced down at him and placed a kiss on his forehead.

"You too."

My eyes fluttered closed and soon I fell asleep.

I woke up to subdued sobs coming from beside me. I looked at Dan who had his head buried in my shoulder, soaking it with tears.

"Dan?"

Dan yelped and pushed me away, rolling off the bed. He scooted away from me on the floor. I stood up and knelt down and he yelped.

"Please don't hurt me," he cried out. "not again!"

"Dan, it was just a nightmare!" I grabbed his wrists and kissed his knuckles. He glanced warily from his hands to my eyes, which were locked with his. "I would never hurt you."

"I know." Dan shook his head and scooted in between my open legs. I sighed and nuzzled his shoulder, his frame relaxing. I placed a chaste kiss on his cheek before scooping him up in my arms and climbing back into bed.
