Paul
With the party being a big success we come off our high that everything went so well. Now it’s time to face our parents. They have both agreed to come together at the park. Summer is playing on the playsets while Jazzy is watching her but is nearby for my support which I’m thankful for. For Mia her brothers and Abby are all here. My mom and dad sit on the left side of the long picnic table while her parents sit on the right almost separated by an invisible force.
“Why are we here?” My dad asks.
“We have something to tell you.” Mia walks over to me putting her arm around my waist. I put my arm around her shoulder. “This is real. Our love for each other is real. That stuff about dating my own race is not. The reason I don’t date white girls is because I love what Mia offers. Not only is she beautiful and smart but she also is there for me no matter what. I’ve seen how far she’s willing to go to protect what she loves and I am so proud and privileged to be able to call her my girlfriend. And one day I hope I can call her my wife. So Mom and Dad you are going to have to get used to us because we aren’t going anywhere.” Mia kisses my cheek before she goes to stand in front of her parents.
“Mom, I already know you like Paul and accept us so you’re not the one I worried about. Daddy, just because Mom has problems with Jason doesn’t mean I will have the same problems with Paul. You heard what he had to say. We love each other. Now even if you don’t accept us after this it won’t matter because I will still love him. But it would be great if you accepted us because he might be your future son in law.” Her mom smiles at her as she gets up and goes to hug her. Then she comes over to me. At first she looks at me seriously then she breaks out into a smile hugging me as well.
Vince steps up in front of his parents. He eyes his dad for awhile then he starts to speak.
“Dad, I almost committed suicide because I thought you were disgusted by me. Me being gay has nothing to do with you or Mom it’s just the way I am. Do you know what it feels like to wonder if your own father hates you? Mia did her best to protect me from you but I realised that if she willing to give up everything for me then it better be for a good reason. I am gay. You need to accept that because it’s not going to change.”
We all go stand in front of our parents holding hands.
“So?” We say at the same time.
“Welcome to the family, Mia.” My mom smiles wiping a tear off her face and my dad nods.
“Don’t hurt my princess, Paul.” Her dad nods before he gets up to stand in front of Vince. “Where is he?”
“Who?” Vince inquires confused.
“Your boyfriend.” His face breaks out into a smile.
“I’m here, sir.” Tony walks over and stands next to Vince.
“Don’t break my son’s heart.”
My parents head home and so does Dom. So we’re the only ones left. We go sit on the edge of the pond while her parents go to the swings. Vince and Tony lie in the grass listening to music.
“I would say this went great.”
“I would say so too.” She smiles before meeting my lips. We all sit around for awhile until her mom gets a phone call. The sound of It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye by Boyz II Men startles us. Mia gets up automatically because she must know who that is. After practically being dragged up to her parents we watch her mom run to the car and peel off.
“What’s going on, Dad?” Mia asks.
“Jason overdosed and he’s on the way to the hospital.”
Mia
I wait up for my mom to come home. My dad and Vince went to sleep a couple hours ago. When I see lights shine on the windows I know she’s home. She walks in the house with a tired expression on her face.
“Mom.” She looks a little shocked to see me. “How is he?”
“He died.”
“I’m sorry, Mom.” I hug and she hugs me gratefully.
“Remember when you asked me if I loved him? I do. I always did I was just afraid to admit it. They gave me the contents of his pockets.” She shows me a beautiful ring and a note. “This was the ring he was going to propose to me with over 10 years ago. Everyday he carried it around in his pocket to remember what he lost. Mia, don’t let love pass you by.” She pats my shoulder before heading up the stairs.
As I follow her I think about what I’ve gone through recently. Finding out that Vince is gay, protecting him to the point of getting beat up, standing up to our parents about Paul’s and I’s love, and finally getting my dad to accept Vince.Through this whole debacle my love for Paul never faded it was tested but in the end it prevailed. So I guess they were right love does conquer all. Now it’s just me and my White Boy.
