The sun’s rays rose over the vast forest as birds chirped from their nest and rabbits poked their heads out of their homes in the ground. The forest was alive with animals rushing around, already busy with the day’s work. But they weren’t the only ones who were busy. Many werewolves were running around as they prepared for their Alpha to come and visit them. The women were getting the children dressed as well as preparing food in the kitchens. Men were getting the patrols together as everyone seemed to be rushing around.
Narissa was the only one who wasn’t as she sat on her bed and sharpened her sai, it helped to calm her even though she was used to killing, and she never did like it. It was a waste of life to kill someone as everyone had a purpose in this world but she couldn’t help it as it had been a direct order while Mr. Evans held onto her birth right. That was by far the only down side of being a mermaid, if someone gave you a command while holding your birth right, you had no choice but to follow through with it.
Sighing Narissa got up and walked over to her bathroom to take a shower, wanting to get her morning run sweat off of her. She shivered as the hot water rushed over her skin and she lifted her face to meet the water drops, the urge to swim was still strong but had lessen a bit from last night’s swim. She let the water help calm her nerves as she thought about what she would do to kill Lucian. She didn’t want to do it in front of everyone; perhaps just killing him in his sleep would be best. But Narissa cringed at the idea, she always meet her enemy face to face to give them a chance at fighting for their life.
She could feel her adrenaline kicking in as she thought more and more about how she was going to kill Lucian. I just felt so wrong to kill him for someone reason, unlike all her other kills, she was the most nervous about this one. Maybe it was because she had grown fond of the pack, she had spent the last four years with them and had even watched little Chris grow up to his little five year old self. It was strange; she almost felt she was leaving another family behind. If anything Narissa had started to feel responsible for their safety, even the safety of those in the pack they had joined.
Turning off the water, Narissa got out before her thoughts could go any farther. It may feel wrong to kill Lucian but she still had to do it. She had never heard of any mermaid nor merman going against their birth right. A command spoken with their birth right in hand held strong magic over her kind, it was like an unspoken promise that could never be broken. That must be why she was so nervous, it was going so long without fulfilling her command but she couldn’t help it. She knew it was going to be a long mission and so did Mr. Evans but still, she was doing it in rather record timing for knowing nothing about where Lucian’s home was. The pack may be big but they sure were tight lipped about where the Alpha and his heir stayed.
Throwing on some clothes, Narissa began to put her weapons on as usual just as three little kids, well teenagers, burst through her door. “Nari! Come on! Luna Megan wants us to go into town to pick up a few things for today.” Pete said loudly as he walked in followed by Sarah and Charles. The little trio always being together.
Narissa raised an eyebrow at them as she slipped her sai into place. “Why’s that. I thought they had gotten everything yesterday.” A whole trunk load had been brought back filled with food and extra blankets and pillows. Megan sure was going crazy but thankfully Clair, the beta female, was able to keep her calm.
“Yep but apparently she that trip wasn’t enough and we need to pick up a few things.” Sarah said as she sat down on her bed.
Looking over at the three of them, Narissa couldn’t believe how big they had gotten. Pete and Charles were a good foot taller than her and even Sarah was a bit taller than her. It was strange seeing them so grown up and for the first time, Narissa was starting to see them as young adults rather than children.
Tilting her head to the side, “How much is a few?” She asked wanting to know if they would have to take the truck or not.
“Just what’s on this list?” Charles said as he held up a piece of paper, “There really isn’t that much. I’m just not sure the town will have any of them. I think Luna has finally snapped.” He chuckled along with Pete and Sarah.
Narissa smiled and took the list reading through it. Sure enough, there were some crazy things like organic goat milk and Roquefort. Groaning, Narissa looked at the others, “You have got to be kidding me. I’ll just go by myself. It’ll be faster that way.”
“Nope, we have to go with you.” Sarah said with a smile as she stood up and the three of them smiled at her.
“Really? You mean they still don’t trust me huh.” Narissa said as she put her hands on her hips and smiled at the three.
“Yeah but they figured you wouldn’t try anything with us around.” Pete chuckled as he turned to walk out the door, “We know you’d never do anything to betray us but they don’t know you like we do.” Pete finished saying as the three of them walked out.
Narissa frowned slightly at the words as she followed them out but smiled as they glanced back at her, “Yeah, still have some trust bonding to do.” That seemed to satisfy them as the laughed but Narissa could feel her stomach tying in knots as she wondered what they would think about her come tomorrow when she is gone and their future Alpha is dead.
Shaking off the thoughts, Narissa ran after the trio as they turned into their wolves and took off into the woods. The run only took them about an hour and the three turned back, putting their clothes back on before stepping out and mixing into the crowd. Well, as best as they could anyways. Charles and Pete were pretty tall even for guys and Sarah was on the taller side as well. Being tall was just a werewolf thing really so they did kind of stick out but it wasn’t so bad. The bad part though was looking for all of the crazy things Megan wanted them to bring back. “Let’s split up and get these things. If we can find them.” Narissa said as she had the three of them take half the list and Narissa took the other half.
Narissa wiggled her nose as the shop keeper put the Roquefort cheese into a bag. She was tempted to ask the guy to wrap it in another layer of paper as the smell was horrible but she took it with a smile and once outside, she stuffed it at the bottom of the bag she had. Looking around she sniffed at the air and then headed for where she could tell the trio was at. The sky had blackened over with a nasty looking cloud and almost everyone was inside, anticipating the rain to come. Turning down a street, Narissa froze as the hair on her arms stood up and she looked around.
She felt like she was being watched but couldn’t see or sense anyone nearby who would want to watch her. Shaking her head, Narissa continued to walk and she waved at the three kids as they walked towards her, having just walked out of a store themselves. “Ugh, what’s that smell?!” Pete said as he held his nose and moved away from Narissa.
“His royal highness’s cheese.” Narissa said as she held up the bag for them to get a good sniff of it. Chuckling as they all moved away quickly.
“How could anyone eat something that smells that bad? Even humans must smell that it’s so strong.” Sarah said as she frowned and covered her nose with her scarf.
“Let’s just hurry back so we don’t have to smell that anymore.” Charles piped in and Narissa nodded her head.
“I must agree.” She smiled and motioned for the trio to follow her back in the woods. Not telling them about being followed as she didn’t want to worry them and as they ran through the forest with the food on Narissa’s back, she felt the presence drift away. But Narissa still felt uneasy with everything, something wasn’t right.
