I put my head down, feeling the stares of my classmates. They were filled with pity. Pity that I didn't want.  "James!" I looked up to find the brown eyes of my best friend. His eyes didn't hold pity, but amusement. "Is what they're saying about your Grandma true?"
I frowned, he wasn't the kind of friend I felt comfortable with knowing about this stuff. I'd seen him make fun of many a deceased family member.
"The corpse finally bit the dust, huh?"
I felt my hands clench, knuckles going white. He never had liked her. She loved him, didn't like me hanging out with him, but she loved him. She loved everyone, whether she liked them or not.
"I can't believe she lasted this long."
I started shaking, the floodgates behind my eyes about to burst.
Then he dared to utter those words.
"Good riddance."
I was surprised to find that I hadn't beat him to the floor, looking down, I discovered why.
"He isn't worth it." A calm, feminine voice rang out from behind a curtain of chocolate brown. She tugged on my arm, and I couldn't help but follow her.
As she dragged me down the hall, the shouts of my now ex-best friend stalking us, I couldn't help but wonder who she was. She, feeling my stare, looked up and grey locked with blue. She seemed surprised, keeping my gaze for only a few moments before looking down. I knew her. She was one of his targets, she'd lost her whole family the year before, and was now living with her Grandmother. She had never responded to him, and now I knew why. As the school year continued to drag past I found myself getting closer to her. I found out that her name is Marry Midford.
As the years went by Marry and James ended up getting married. His parents loved having her over. And Marry loved learning all she could about Suji, she felt like she knew her. And, last but certainly not least, Marry was pregnant. They were the happiest they'd ever been. They would soon be gifted with a little baby girl.
