ONE:

I always swore that my step-mother Theresa got her culinary degree in an alley way. I eyed the suspicious grey substance that took residence on the corner of my plate. "This looks like a TV dinner." I mumbled.

Greg, my father set his fork down and folded his hands. "I'm sorry, Kels, what was that?" His unaproving glare bored into me like a drill. "I said it smells delicious." I lied through clenched teeth.

Theresa removed her apron and draped it over her chair. "It looks like the cabbage rolls came out perfectly!" She exclaimed, shoveling a spoonfull of the grey blob into her yappy pie hole.

Sonny, the step-brat, drove his fork into the table, tearing the floral tablecloth that seemed to emit the smell of mothballs all. The. Time. With a stern swat, Theresa scolded him.

The family dog, an ancient Yorkshire Terrier, was the animal equivilant of Theresa. Unfortunately it is legal to euthanize only one of them and not both.

There was a knock at the door and I happily obliged to getting it. I opened the door to see my two dear friends Sammy Lindsay and Courtney Butts. Sammy was five nine with dark, curly hair just above his shoulders. His face was riddled with acne scars and his thick lensed glasses made it seem like he was staring at you through a fishbowl. Courtney was unfortunate to be born into a last name like "Butts", and even more unfortunate for the face that she didn't have the greatest genes either. She stands at a mere five foot four with tangles of dirty blonde hair that reached halfway down her back. Her dull grey eyes were constantly lined with clumpy charcoal mascara and harsh eyeliner. She had nearly flawless skin, although close to translucent. She was very thin, and had a manly frame. Reguardless of how they looked, they were the only people at South Bethany High School with a personality that wasn't equivilant to that of a spoiled heiress/heir or a sheet of damp cardboard. Usually, Bethany folk were the latter.

"God what's that awful smell?" Sammy asked, covering his mouth and nose with a large, bony hand. "Theresa cooked dinner. If you consider that stuff edible." I shuddered. "Kels, we were planning on maybe catch a movie at the drive in." Courtney started. "They're playing Spiderman, we can throw popcorn at the screen and express our hate for Toby Maguire." Sammy interjected, his scrawny body shifted slightly. Glad to escape the dinner horrors of the grey cabbage, I grabbed my coat and bounded out the door, shouting back to let my dad know I was leaving.

Sammy, Courtney and I packed into Sammy's 1993 Ford Ranger and headed across town to what seemed like the only drive in in the state. It was always cram packed. Luckily, arriving just short of an hour early we got a pretty decent spot by a cluster of small trees. All was well until a red mini cooper pulled up two cars down. I recognized that car, and refused to look that way as a tall, tanned blonde shouted out the window.

"KELSEY!" I pulled the hood of my sweatshirt up over my head and tried to ignore her screeching. "KELSEY WINTER, I SEE YOU OVER THERE!" Raine Shwimmer poped out of her mini coop and started my way, her high waisted yellow jeans and pink heels made her stick out like a sore thumb. I took a deep breath and prepared myself for impact.
