METAL THAT DEFINED THE NOUGHTIES
The first decade of the 21st century saw new popularity for classic Metal genres. Heavy and Power Metal finally bounced back after the difficult nineties, and new waves of Black and Death bands were on the rise.
Nevertheless, it were the genres that had their roots in the 90's that would dominate and shape the new century.
At the start of the decade, the Nu-Metal of Limp Bizkit & Linkin Park reigned supreme. The hype didn't last that long though, and soon the Metal crown would be claimed by Metalcore bands. Bands like Caliban and Bullet For My Valentine who mixed together Thrash and Hardcore influences.
At the same time, Groove Metal and Melodic Death Metal continued to grow after their initial rise in the 90's. New bands of those genres like Lamb Of God and Arch Enemy swiftly took their place amongst the Metal elite.
It was clear that Metal had started to evolve in many ways, and the genre opened itself more and more to experimentation. At the start of the decade, New Progressive icons Tool had blown everyone away with their masterpiece 'Lateralus', but it would be another Progressive band that would become the face of 21st century Metal: Mastodon.
Formed in 2000, the band has brought an eclectic sound that has been met with unanimous critical – and commercial – acclaim. Like no other band, Mastodon is the perfect representation of Heavy music in the century's first decade: Exciting, experimenting, and taking no prisoners.
Oh, and did we mention the biggest Metal band of all time – Metallica – returned to their Thrash roots at the decade's end with a fantastic come-back album? It was a good decade!
On this Essential collection, we bring together the most impactful bands and songs that shaped the 2000's!
