Jason

I lay still, as I have for the past seven hours. Morning dew still wet on my armor and rifle, the grass waves with a new breeze.

A few people pass through my view, most of them Amanti, but also three freelancers. At over a mile away, I don’t worry about them seeing me move forward slightly, getting a better view of my target.

An Amanti officer, a General by the looks of him, rides in the side of a warthog, I say softly “Arrogant son of a bitch.” I am for his head, making slight adjustments to my scope. I have less than thirty seconds before he goes behind the rock face, which is plenty of time.

I make the final adjustments, and re-aim. I squeeze the trigger, so carefully. Then the rifle kicks against my shoulder, the bullet leaving with a loud crack.

I watch as his head explodes, the driver of the warthog swerving left and right. The next bullet goes into the driver, the last into the gunner.

I look from my scope, all I can see is trees, and a lot of them. I stand, water running from my armor. Gathering the three casings, I leave the ridge without a sound, descending into the forest.

Out of no-where, my radio crackles to life, “Jason, do you read? Repeat, can you hear me Jason?” I stop walking, “Yeah I hear you Two, where are you?” I hear a small sigh from the comm, “Just took out Colonel Broadboard, you?”

I smile, the mission was a success, “The general is dead, so is half his escort. Rendezvous at the drop zone, I’ll get command to send us a bird. Be there in five, can’t wait much longer than that.”

After a brief silence, “Copy that, see you on the other side, Two out.” The comm goes dead.

I spend the next three minutes climbing over fallen trees and weaving between vines. When I arrive at the clearing, I see a falcon waiting for us. As I approach the bird I hear gunfire.

I duck behind a tree, throwing my active camo on. When I lean from the tree, I see three Amanti soldiers looking into the cockpit of the falcon. The pilot is slumped over the controls.

I watch as the soldiers pull him from the seat, check the falcon, and start loading several bags into the seats. After a couple minutes, I notice that Two hasn’t shown up, suddenly a small screen with his face pops up, “What’s going on, this our flight out?” I lean back behind the tree, “Yeah, Amanti got here at the same time I did.”

I hear the soldiers loading some more cargo. “Two, where are you?” I don’t hear anything from the comm, but I see a blue light in the forest across from me, he’s on a small outcrop of rocks.

“Stay there, wait till you hear me engage, then take out the one by the gun, understand?” Another flash from his light, I nod to myself, laying on the ground, I look through my scope, I only have one more shot.

I aim for the one by the cockpit, I see Two’s laser on his target. I see he also only has one bullet, crap.

I fire the first round, pulling out my blade before Two can even fire. I cross the distance in the time of a second. I lunge at the last soldier just as the one by the gun drops.

I stab the blade through the soldiers chest plate. He lets out a loud scream, I pull the blade out and stab the top of his head.

As Two comes from the forest, I wipe the blood of my knife, “You ready to go?” Two throws his rifle in the back, “I was ready yesterday when they dropped us. What were they loading?” I walk over as he opens a bag, several chunks of C4 fall out. He steps back, “Damn, they were planning something big.”

We fly out of the forest, Two stays in the back and holds our cargo from falling, back to green base.”
