Chapter Ten
As the next few weeks went by, Lady Clarissa and Lord Lucas became closer. He had taken her to the opera once again when a new opera came to London. They attended balls, soirees, and house parties together. The talk of London was that finally Lord Lucas was going to settle down and marry. A man of his position was due to marry and produce an heir.
They were attending a ball this evening for Lord Royce’s youngest sister. It was her coming out ball and everyone was attending.
“Annie…..please try again and pull my corset a bit tighter” asked Clarissa.
“Milady, I’ve tried, I’m just not strong enough. Besides, this gown you’ve chosen, your bust does not fit anymore. If Lord Stephen sees you in this gown, he will be furious with you. You are practically fall out of it. I hate to say this Milady, but you seem to have put on a few pounds. This gown is not going to fit,” stated Annie.
Sighing….Clarissa knew that she was right. “Annie, well I need a gown for this evening. Do you think you could alter one for me. It’s still is three hours before Lucas comes to get me”.
“I’ll get right on it Milady, but let’s find one of your gowns that can actually be altered. We need to find one that you have not worn yet either”.
After searching her wardrobe, Clarissa found a gown of scarlet red that had extra fabric in the lining. Annie was currently altering the dress while Clarissa fixed her hair. After putting the gown on, Clarissa realized that her bust was still overflowing a bit, but now she was out of time and could not change her gown once more. She tried to pull the square neckline up as much as possible, but it was no use.
