"Can we try it?" asked Dakota eagerly.
"Sure," Clarisse responded. "you guys have to go one at a time though. Who wants to go first?"
"You can go Dakota." Octavian said quickly, "I don't really want to try it."
"Why not?" asked Clarisse as she began to hook Dakota into the harness.
"I'm not really the athletic type." Octavian shrugged.
"You were a pretty good fighter during Capture the Flag last night." Clarisse responded.
"Well, the fighting wasn't very fun." He said, "don't get me wrong though, the game was incredible. Absolutely incredible." Clarisse paused her work on the harness and began to blush. She glanced up at Octavian to see him blushing just as hard as her.
"I don't know what up with you two, but I wanna climb." Said Dakota.
"Sorry," Clarisse muttered as she finished clipping on the harness. "climb away."
As Dakota began to climb the treacherous wall, Octavian and Clarisse stood awkwardly. Octavian shifted from foot to foot and Clarisse began to nervously play trace her dove tattoo with her finger. If there was any time she could use Silena's advice, it was now.
"Clarisse," Octavian said with a shaky breath. "I haven't known you very long, I don't know your favorite color, or your favorite thing to do, or your favorite foods. But one thing I do know is that you treat me better than any girl ever has. And... I wanted to know, if you would maybe... go on a date with me tonight?" Octavian looked at the ground nervously.
"Of course." Clarisse said with a calm smile, "In fact, I know the perfect place."
A few hours later, Clarisse met Octavian on the back porch of the Ares cabin. She knew she couldn't let her siblings see her with him. What would they say... Clarisse, the daughter of Ares, going out with a Roman. She almost laughed out loud at the thought.
Clarisse grabbed two towels and then began to lead Octavian through the woods to their secret date spot.
"Where are you taking me?" Octavian asked.
"It's a secret." Clarisse said with a smile. As the two walked they saw the campers begin to leave their cabins and head to the campfire for a sing-a-long. Clarisse was glad to be missing the campfire. She hated the singing and the buddy-buddiness of the whole thing. She was much happier to be going out with Octavian that night. The pair continued to walk until they arrived at a clearing in the forest. In the open space, there was a waterfall trickling into a small pond.
"Did you remember to bring your swim trunks?" Clarisse asked the pale boy.
"Yes I did," said Octavian.
"Good," said Clarisse as she began to remove her shirt to reveal her swimsuit. She took off her shorts and shoes and then dove into the cool water. She stayed under for a long time, savoring the feeling of the currents through her hair. Before Prissy Jackson had arrived, she had been the best swimmer at camp. She stayed under until she felt like her lungs would burst.
When she finally broke the surface, she found a shirtless Octavian waiting for her. She was surprised when she saw Octavian's abs. Despite his scrawny appearance, he actually had a nice six-pack. Clarisse found herself staring slightly longer than she wished.
"You were down there for a really long time, I was getting nervous." Octavian said with a smile. Clarisse just shrugged in response.
"So are you gonna get in?" Octavian grinned and cannonballed into the pool.
Clarisseand Octavian splashed in the cool water until the sun was setting. They laughedand talked and floated around for hours. Clarisse looked over at Octavian'swet, blonde hair and smiled. Any nerves she had felt about the date had longsince disappeared. As she sat with Octavian, she forgot the pain of Silena'sdeath, the heartbreak of her breakup with Chris, and the stress of being ademigod. Clarisse almost felt like a carefree mortal girl. Until she heard therustling in the bushes.
