"Kennedy! Hello!" exclaims Ashton.
"Hi, I guess we're neighbors," I say.
"Well isn't that convenient…?" says Calum, tickling Luke's sides.
"I have a cake… for you guys," I say, handing them the homemade cake.
"Thanks," says Michael, taking the cake from my hands.
Soon I hear my name being called from next door.
"Kennedy Montgomery!"
Ugh. Mom! You're embarrassing me.
"Yes?" I ask shyly.
My nearly-40 year old step mother runs to me.
"Hey sweetheart," she says, kissing my forehead.
"Mom…" I warn.
"Hi, I'm Tara, Kennedy's mother," she says protectively.
"You look like her sister," says Ashton.
"Cheeky, but sweet. I'm her step mom. We're 19 years apart," says my mom.
"Okay, mom, weren't we just leaving?" I ask, linking arms and walking away.
"No, I was going to ask the boys if they didn't have any plans… they could eat dinner at our house," she says.
Oh dear Lord. Mother!
"You guys don't have to—" Luke interrupts me.
"We'd love to. See you later."
Oh Luke, if you weren't so cute I'd kill you.
"Great! 6:30, don't be late," says my mom. "Thanks Mrs Montgomery," says Calum.
The boys watch us leave their property and then close their door.
Oh dear Lord.

"Okay, pasta, meat, cheese. Repeat. Got it?" assures mom.
"Yeah," I say.
Pasta… meat… cheese. Pasta… meat… cheese. Pasta…
Bzz. Bzz. Ooh a phone call! I check the caller ID: Lukey
Damn.
"Hello?"
"H-hey Kennedy."
"Oh hey Luke."
"So um… what's up?"
"Helping my mom with dinner. You?"
"Just uh… you know, hanging out."
"Oh. Cool."
"Yeah. So um… did you… maybe want to go… get some frozen yogurt with me…? Some day."
"Oh, yeah! Sure. Sounds like loads of fun!"
"R-really?"
"Yeah! Unless you're backing out."
"No! I-I mean no. I'd never. So I'll pick you up tomorrow at 6?"
"Sounds good."
"Great, see you later."
I hang up and see my mom smiling widely.
"What?" I ask confused.
"Was it Luke?"
