Chapter One-

It was early on a Saturday morning, so early Zayn had beaten the sun up. This was odd considering the raven haired boy was always last to awaken, along with Harry, especially on a weekend. But he figured since he was already wide awake, he’d make the most of his day by starting it off extra early. He walked into the kitchen and proceeded to find something to eat, even though he had no idea where anything was.

The boys of one direction, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, and Zayn Malik, had arrived at a beautiful, expensive, lake house the night before, only having enough time to choose their rooms. With the house being on privately owned property, the boys figured it’d be the best place to take a break from the flashing lights for a while, with there being absolutely no access from the outside world.

Sleepy-eyed Zayn, opened a cupboard and pulled a bowl from it, creating a somewhat loud disturbance. He rolled his eyes to the air, sighed, and set the bowl on the counter.

”Milk milk milk..” Zayn repeated to himself, his voice seemingly lower than usual. It was still so dark he could barely find the fridge, but as he pulled the door open, the space filled with light. He squinted his eyes, bringing his hand up to his face and scratching his stubbled chin. His eyes searched through the glow, looking for milk when after what seemed like hours of white blindness, he found it.

He poured some milk into the small glass bowl, it splashing out and onto his sweats, causing a string of curse words to leave his lips. It wasn’t long before he recalled someone saying there was no cereal in the house. This being no help to him anyway since he had poured the milk first.

”Just great.” He whispered and put the milk back into the fridge, the light not so blinding this time. He walked from the kitchen and sat down on the couch in empty silence. He watched as the digital clock on the DVD player continued its set course, one minute after the next, when he felt an abrupt, sharp pain in his shoulder.

”Gotchya” Harry sort of giggled, pulling away from the crook of Zayn’s neck. Zayn pulled away, rubbing the spot where Harry had just previously bitten him.

”What the hell Harry! That actually hurt!” Zayn scowled in the darkness. His expression couldn’t be seen by Harry, but the boy knew exactly what he’d look like if the lights were on.

”Sorry I just saw you were awa-” Harry was cut off by Zayn’s gesture suggesting he whisper. “I just heard you get up and well I wasn’t asleep so I thought I’d come down.” Harry continued to speak, in a whisper voice this time.

”Yeah well you didn’t have to bite me you dick.” Zayn tapped Harry’s forehead in a playful, somewhat disciplining manner. Harry laughed and walked around to sit on the couch next to Zayn. “You know we have about another hour left before daylight right?” Zayn whispered to Harry, the boy who was now sat next to him running his hand threw his infamous mop of curls.

”Yes I understand.” Harry whispered deeply. “I like the darkness.” The sentence seemed like ice leaving the curly haired boys warm lips. The words danced across the couch to Zayn, hitting him and sending a shiver down his spine. He shook it off and stared at Harry. All he could see was his dark outline against the seemingly darker background. But Zayn could tell Harry was staring at the floor.

”Well isn’t that cheerful.” Zayn chuckled, causing Harry’s head to snap up and turn towards his voice. The younger boy let out a small laugh.

”Zayn I think I’m gonna go back to sleep.” Harry said, the sentence ending with a loud yawn. “I’m awful tired. Do you mind if I sleep on the couch here?”

”Not at all man, sleep away.” Zayn motioned down at the cushions, realizing how stupid the movement was being that Harry couldn’t see it.

”Okay night.” Zayn could tell Harry was smiling as he let his head hit the end of the couch. The darkness continued to swallow them. Sunlight seemed so far out of reach.

"Wake up sleepy head!" A familiar voice shouted, shortly after Zayn was hit in the face with a pillow. He was still on the couch.

”Shit. What time is it Louis?” Zayn rubbed his eyes to rid them of sleep.

”It’s almost 4 PM!” The familiar voice called from the kitchen. “You’ve been sleeping all day.” Louis chuckled and walked into the next room.

”What the…” Zayn looked at the clock on the DVD player. He blinked his eyes in disbelief when he saw it read 3:47. “Hey Lou?”

”Yeah?” Louis called from down the hall, sounding preoccupied.

”Have you seen Harry at all today?”

”Can’t say that I have mate. Liam and him took off sometime early this morning to go-” the rest of Louis sentence sounded jumbled and Zayn couldn’t make the rest out.

”To go where?” Zayn looked up at the ceiling as if he was talking to someone, a puzzled look cast on his face. There was no reply, but the sound of the back door closing. “Alrighty then.”

Louis sat down on the porch swing to face the beautiful, crystal clear lake. The water being absolutely still, it seemed as if it were made of glass. The lake house was on an island in the center, the only way two and from was by boat. “Zayn come out here!” Louis shouted, his eyes drifting off into the distance. Hearing him, Zayn came outside closing the patio door behind him.

”You yelled?” Zayn laughed sitting down next to Louis on the swing. Louis shrugged it off and continued to stare onward blankly. “Uhm Lou…” Zayn’s voice trailed off.

”Isn’t it beautiful.” Louis stared into the tree line that surrounded the lake.

”Oh yeah sure it is.” Zayn stared at his lap. He wasn’t all that big on nature.

”When do we ever hear this sound Zayn.” Louis whispered, trying to sound thoughtful. He turned to look at Zayn, who had clearly bypassed the comment. Realizing the silence Zayn looked up.

”Oh uh I don’t hear anything.”

”Exactly my point.” Louis smiled and tapped Zayn’s shoulder prying his attention once again from his lap. “When do we ever hear absolutely nothing? We’re constantly being chased by girls and paparazzi, we never get breaks like these.”

Zayn laughed and looked at Louis with wide eyes. He understood completely where the older lad was coming from. “Lou we knew what we were getting ourselves into when we signed up for all of this.”

”I understand, but sometimes I wish I wasn’t ya know…” Louis stared into Zayn’s eyes.

”I don’t follow.” Zayn said staring back.

”I wish I wasn’t famous.” Louis stated blatantly, somewhat hissing the last word in the sentence. He brought his gaze once more to the tree line and the glassiness of the large reflection pool.

”Too late for that.” Zayn shrugged and got up from the swing causing it to slowly rock. He opened the back door and slipped back inside, leaving Louis staring out into the open wilderness.

Zayn was just about to flick on the television when a thought popped into his head. Then just like that he was up the stairs and into Niall’s room. He slowly cracked the door open, being extra cautious, not wanting to startle the Irish boy or anything. To his surprise Zayn saw Niall, wrapped up in the white cotton sheets, still fast asleep.
