Enjoy.
The main level of the Washington FBI department resembles a standardised police station- on crack. Everything is sleek, shiny and brand new. 'Suits' roam the myriad of office cubicles, carrying important documentations and files. Agent Calder leads from the front, nodding curtly at two men paused to watch my entrance.
"This Harvey's girl?" the one with the cigar asks Calder, sizing me up in disgust.
"The brother's," Calder replies.
For lack of better judgement, I remained stunned to silence, my mind reeling. Somers places his hand on the small of my back, urging me on quicker, and I flinch but keep moving.
"Don't pay attention to the ignoramuses, Miss Price," he says. "The girls like their little gossip sessions."
I can tell he's trying to make light of my current mood and situation, but it's not working. I've worked myself into a near anxiety attack by the time we reached an interrogation room. The jet ride was torture; I couldn't shut my eyes, couldn't switch off my mind. And now, upon landing in Washington, my senses feel hyper-exploited. I could list the number of things wrong with this room. The air is stale; the steel table captures my pale reflection, the chair beneath me feels like a bed of pins and needles; and any voices or noise has been sucked out of ear shot like a vacuum once that door closed.
Somers and Calder sit opposite me.
"You look tense, Miss Price. Here, have a drink," Somers lifts a water bottle onto the table and pushes it across to me.
I wipe at the sweat forming on my top lip, but politely decline his offer.
"So," Agent Calder begins. "Where you from, Miss Price?"
"Arizona, originally," I reply, surprised at the straight forward question. I suppose they were just going to ease me in to the interrogation.
Agent Calder nods encouragingly, his attention flipping through a manila folder entitled Case Sensitive in bold, red lettering.
"You graduated with honours..." Calder glances up at me, squinting a little. "Your academic records prove you had admission to any college of your choice in the country, why UCE?"
"I-I don't know. It had a great psychology program," I stammer.
"So does Brown," shrugs Calder.
"So does Penn State," interjects Somers, which almost felt like a stab in the back after being so kind towards me beforehand.
"What's in California, Miss Price?"
"I don't understand why you're asking me this."
The pair look at each other. "We just want to know how it is you and Sebastian Harvey came to be roommates, is all."
"I told you, Sebastian had nothing to do with that hostage and neither did I. Why are you so certain he's involved?"
"We're asking the questions here, Missy," Calder glares at me.
I huff, folding my arms across my chest. "I told you, UCE had a great undergrad Psych program. That's all there is to it."
"Fair enough," Agent Somers tries a different approach. "How about you tell us how you and Sebastian first met?"
