Chapter Three
The weeks passed way too slowly. I was already bogged down with homework and I visited my sister from four to seven which really left no time to do it so I would stay up late cramming it all in. I was surprised I had all A's.
Jake didn't bug me as much but was still following me around whenever we had classes together. He insisted on carrying my books, and I let him. If I didn't know any better I would have thought he had a crush on me. But I do know better and there is no way Jake Ellis would fall for a girl like me. He probably just pitied me because I hadn't met a single friend yet. On Tuesday s and Thursday s he sat with me at lunch but the other days I would bring lunch to my sister. He didn't know that was where I was though.
"Where are you always disappearing to?" he asked a couple weeks later. I didn't know what to respond so I simply said "I have promises to keep." He nodded and continued on with eating his lunch. He hasn't brought it up since so I have been hoping that maybe he won't bring it up again. I was going to math one day after lunch when I felt my phone buzzing in my back pocket. I glanced around making sure there were no teachers in sight before I slipped behind the lockers and answered it.
"Hello?" I whispered.
"Honey? Oh honey its me mom, Paige has been asking about you non-stop and she was hoping maybe you could talk for a couple minutes. I tried explaining you were busy but she didn't understand."
"Oh that's okay, just, uh I'm going to be late for math can I call you back in a little bit?" In the background I could hear my mother trying explain to Paige but she started whining and throwing a fit. "Never mind mom, just put her on real fast."
"Okay thank you so much Eva! I didn't know if I could take it anymore." Mom laughed a weak and exhausted laugh.
"Sister? Sister is you there?" Paige's little voice said into the phone.
"Yes sissy, I'm here, what do you need sweetie?" I asked glancing at the clock seeing that the bell would ring in a minute.
"I want you to come so we can play stuffies!" Paige said in a weak voice.
"Honey, I cant right now but I'll be there soon but I need to go now okay. Okay I love you sissy I call you back when I get the chance." After the call ended I hurried to class with just seconds to spare. The only seat left was one next to Jake. Great, just what I need. I thought to myself and set my books on the table next to Jake.
"Hello Evangeline." Jake said still staring at book.
"Hi.” I said quietly. I set my stuff down, opened to the page and listened to the lesson. After class I quickly gathered my things and left the room, I gathered my books and went to my next class. I was early so I went to the bathroom and checked my phone. Three new text messages were there, all from my mother. I need you to call Paige back soon. Paige is having a little trouble today, pray for her. I'm worried about Paige, please pray. Those were what the three messages said. I hurried back to class, sat in my seat and said a simple prayer to God for Paige.
I sat and listened to the lesson and figured I only had a couple periods left before I could leave and go to my sister. My sister is everything to me. She counts on me, she loves me, and she likes to play Barbie’s and stuffies with me. She is the cutest little girl I know, and who knows how much more time I get to be Lonnie the Lion and go stomping through the forest with my best friend Gerry the giraffe?
The rest of the day passed quickly and I was thankful to be going to Paige. I gathered my homework and started off to my truck. When I arrived at my truck there was a small card taped carefully to the window.
Football game Saturday, you should come it's @ 4:00
-Jake
Too bad, I thought to myself, I'm with Paige on weekends. I grabbed a pencil from my bag and scrawled back, Sorry, with my sis. Maybe next time...I went back in and shoved it through his locker and hurried back to my truck and drove off to see Paige.
