I was starting a Percy Jackson/Avengers crossover fanfiction like any other day during summer vacation, and like many other PJO/Avengers fanfiction, it started with Fury looking through Percy's 'file' at SHIELD.
The file lists most of the normal stuff, like Percy's relations, date of birth, appearance, and the reasons why he is a suspected terrorist.
The list of Percy's crimes goes like this:
-has bombed or set fire to multiple schools or school property
-suspected of kidnapping mother, Sally Jackson, and seen having gunfights with unknown grown man in public areas on multiple occasions
-was seen near St. Louis Arch before and after a bomb attack
-disappears to a supposed "summer camp" for long periods of time during school breaks; is seen in multiple areas of the country during said time period
-was seen near Mt. St. Helens shortly before/after it erupted
-possibly related to the incident in Manhattan (in which all civilians were knocked unconscious for over 24 hours and woke to a destroyed city)
And so on, blah, blah, blah. What really interests me about this is the action I underlined.
I can understand most of the other listed actions. Percy attended all the schools he destroyed, so it wouldn't be hard to connect the dots there. His mom was kidnapped, and Gabe put up all that advertisement to get his car back and stuff, blaming Percy. Even then, he was a news story, with people saying that they saw him fighting with an unknown grown man, so that isn't hard. There was bound to be at least one person who saw Percy before he went up the St. Louis Arch, and we know that kid saw him there, too, walking out of the water completely dry. The mom might not believe that Percy came out of the river dry, but she still saw him and could confirm it with SHIELD. Percy's on SHIELD's criminal watchlist, for Pete's sake! And of course they would know if Percy goes off the grid like that. Plus, the Manhattan thing? Please, the Mist is good, but not that good; especially if it's against a super spy government agency like SHIELD that probably surveils every inch of at least the US at all hours.
What I don't believe is that SHIELD has evidence that Percy was even in the same state as Mt. St. Helens before or after the eruption. Let me give a recap, dear crossover authors. The last time SHIELD saw Percy, it was in New York state, where he had blown up yet another school. He ran away and the police couldn't catch him, as usual. Then he went to Camp Half-blood, which SHIELD thinks is his hideout, and was dormant. SHIELD didn't see anything else that happens to Percy up to Mt. St. Helens, because after what I just said, Percy was in the Labyrinth. Underground. Not under any type of SHIELD surveillance in any way that would be definite. SHIELD hadn't seen him traveling to Washington in this time period! They still thought he was in New York, planning his next school bombing in his hideout, which they believe is in New York.
And don't try to tell me, "They could have seen him after the eruption," because they couldn't have. Unless they saw his half-dead body flying away from the volcano to a nonexistant island... somewhere, they did not see him until about two weeks after, and even then, he was in New York, visiting an artist friend. Doesn't exactly scream, "criminal activity," you know?
Tell me your thoughts and opinions! Share this with authors who got their information wrong! Thank you so much for reading, and have a happy Father's day!
