"I'm not good at making these big, romantic, firework-sparking speeches, so bear with me," Reed Carter begged just as she was about to leave him alone.
Shae Russo turned around with a scowl on her face as hard as the barn floor she stood on. With both hands perched on her hips, she looked to him with raised eyebrows. "I'm listening," she told him.
"I don't know why I can't let you go, okay?" Reed admitted, "Believe me, it would be so much easier if I could just watch you walk away and feel nothing, but I can't."
"Oh, wow, you really do suck at these speeches," Shae said with a roll of her hazel eyes.
Reed shook his head, ignoring that last jab, and continued, "You're cold, manipulative, secretive, and you couldn't trust anyone if your life depended on it!" he exclaimed with frustration.
"Yeah?" Shaw snapped back, "Well you're an immature, self-centered, overly-competitive, hard-ass with an ego the size of Asia!" she yelled back, "If anyone's hard to be around it's you!"
"Why? Because I tell you things everyone else is too afraid to say?" Reed accused, "Because unlike everyone else in your life I genuinely care about you!"
"You don't," Shae's shaky voice replied, her eyes beginning to grow wet as she took a step backwards, "No one has ever cared about me, or even taken the time to try to care about me. Why would you of all people care about a girl like me?"
"I don't know," Reed replied while scratching the back of his head, "I honestly have no friggin idea. But for some reason, I do. And I know you care about me too."
"Yeah, sure," Shae replied sarcastically with a scoff.
"You do," Reed told her matter-of-factly, "Or you wouldn't still be here."
