our taxi pulled up to burger king, where we hurried out and into the venue, before anyone could see us. the taxi driver had no idea who we were, so i think that's a good thing?

el, liam and lou decided to be the ones that went with me, due to a discussion (that i was not involved in).

i took liams hand, wrapping my other arms around his. the place was empty except one girl standing, looking down at her phone. she looked up omce she heard the door and gasped.

"emilie," was all she said.

the girl obviously had to be kellie. she didn't look over 35, barely 30 even. she had long blonde curls, that were probably slightly longer than eleanor's. her eyes are a green but kind of blue around the outside.

"kellie?" i asked, stepping closer. she is taller than me, but not by a lot.

"yeah. yeah it's me," she said, looking at me in awe.

"hi."

"hi. uh, shall we go..? my car is parked out there?" she asked, still seeming shocked.

"yeah. um, this is eleanor, and liam," i introduced them, gesturing to each liam and el as i said their names.

kellie nodded, smiling in their direction. liam returned with a small smile, which el just looked a bit shocked, like kellie.

"i'm sorry," kellie said, finally tearing her eyes away from my face, for good this time, "you just..look so much like her," she said. i swallowed, looking down.

"uh, shall we go?"

*

kellie pulled up in front of a house, at least 5 minutes away from burger king. it was a small house that looked not messy, but like it had only recently been attended to; which i suppose it had.

"it's where i grew up," kellie told us, unlocking the front door and holding it open for us.

i stepping inside, gripping liam's arm again, and el right in front of us.

"it's ok em," liam told me, kissing the top of my head.

"please, sit," kellie told us, gesturing to the table that was directly opposite the kitchen. we did as kellie said.

"tea? coffee? i think i have biscuits? maybe soft drink?" she offered.

"uhh i'll have some tea?" el spoke quietly for the first time since we had met up with kellie. i smiled at el, which she returned nervously.

'are you okay?' i mouthed and she shrugged and nodded. i reached under the table and took her hand in mine.

"um..same, please," liam said and kellie nodded, smiling.

"emilie?" she asked me, biting her bottom lip and i shook my head, shyly.

kellie turned on the kettle which heated up quickly, "milk, sugar?"

"um little bit of milk please. and liam will have one and a half sugars please," el said, smirking at liam. he laughed silently.

we sat quietly until kellie bought the hot cups of tear to the table, placing them in front of liam and el.

"so.." kellie said, breaking the silence.

"my mum," i urged, and she nodded.

"from the start?"

"from the start."

kellie smiled. "it was fourth grade when i first met your mum. i had just moved from britain. she was stunning, even with most of her front teeth missing. we immediately became best friends,"

*

i drank the last of the tea from liam's cup-which he gladly shared with me. we are up to 9th grade. my mum was so much more than what i knew her as.. i never expected her to be anything like what kellie said. i didn't really think about what she might have been like, but now that i know..i'm glad. she was so amazing. i would have loved her.

"so in 9th grade, over the summer we had spend nearly the whole summer together. she dip dyed her hair pink, like yours now, and got a nose ring. all the boys were suddenly all over her. she had an (older) boyfriend though, and we snuck out at least once a week to his place for a party. when school started again, she became a bit reckless. i'm not sure if it was something she was testing, but she back chatted teachers and was put on detentions-which she skipped. it didn't last long, but it was funny while it did," kellie laughed.

she stood up and got a book from the shelf next to the couch, "yearbook," she said, dropping the book in front of me.

"it was her last year before she moved to Britain, and i had convinced my parents, after almost a year, to let me go and live with your mum and her family. since we were leaving next year they made us our own yearbook. grade 7 to 9."

i opened the book. the first page was a big picture of awkward 12 year olds. my mum was obviously the one on the left. i look so much like her, then. her hair was a bit shorter, and her eyes more green, but besides that we could be almost twins.

i looked through the pages of pictures of my mum and kellie through high school. cheer leading photos, halloween school dances, them singing on stage.

"she could sing?" i asked, staring at the photo.

"amazingly. me, not so much. she was always too nervous to go on stage alone so i went with her, even though i can't sing to save my life," kellie laughed.

"wow," i whispered, turning the page to another photo of my mother singing.

"can you sing?" kellie asked, and before i could respond, el and liam answered.

"yes! she's amazing!"

"she's so good! it gives us all chills everytime!"

i blushed, turning the next page. "you definitely got that from ashley," she smiled.

i closed the book, having reached the end.

"in 10th grade, in britain, your mum
was immediately a threat to the popular bitches, all the boys looking at her. she even set me up with an amazing guy, that i love so much. unfortunately..john came into her life.. but besides that, our lives were like in the movies."

"you said you love the guy my mum set you up with. is he here?" i asked, slightly nervous another version of john might appear.

"no. he's back in Britain. his mum was involved in a car accident a few days before i first called you. her condition is..bad. he couldn't come," kellie said, with a sad smile.

"i'm sorry. i hope his mum is okay.."

"i hope so too," kellie replied.

she gasped suddenly and el almost stood up, surprised and maybe even a bit scared

"i almost forgot!" kellie muttered, running off somewhere down the dark hall.

i held onto liam's hand once again. he squeezed my smaller hand reassuringly.

kellie came back in holding a small box.

"sorry! i didn't mean to scare you!" she apologized, setting the box in front of me.

"what's this?" i asked quietly.

"open it," she spoke softly. i reached for the box with my free hand, glancing at el quickly before returning my gaze to the little black box in front of me.

with a little difficulty, i opened the box, still gripping liam's hand.

inside was a necklace. a plain silver chain, with a cross attached to it.

"it's a locket," kellie explained as i picked it up slowly.

"i don't know much about it. your mum was supposed to tell you i think, but she gave it to me a while after she had you, and told me when i saw you i had to give you it. i remember her starting to wear it at the end of tenth grade. all i know is she like it because she had never seen a locket except the movies, and she had never before seen a cross one," kellie told me, watching me carefully.

i let go of liam's hand to hold the locket properly. the edges were slightly damaged, and it had a small heart on the top right corner. i gently opened it. there was something on each side. on the top, there was a small quote. i took out the paper, el and liam leaning over my shoulders to get a look.

'beauty is only how you see it' the quote read. i blinked a few times as the quote re-read itself over in my head. i remember vaguely her telling me that once, a long time ago.

i felt liam's arms around me and i came back into reality. i notice tears in my eyes and i blinked them away, hugging liam back.

"are you okay?" el whispered in my ear and i nodded.

"yeah. yeah i'm fine," i gave them all a small smile, picking up the locket again, pulling the photo from the bottom. it was a young girl holding a baby. my mum. she was in hospital, smiling down at what i assume must be me. i bit on my lip.

i feel so..vunerable. i don't even know..
i can feel everyone's eyes on me, waiting for me to cry, scream, burst, something, but i just felt slightly light headed.

i placed the photo back in the locket and looked kellie directly in the eyes, taking a deep breath.
