"What?" The word seemed to float away into the twilight. "Y-you can't be serious."

"I'm sorry, Karson, but I think we need to see other people." His voice was flat and distant.

"B-but why?" Tears were already forming, blurring my vision. I blinked furiously.

"Look, I just don't feel the same anymore," he said, turning away so his back was facing me.

"Please, K-Kobie," I whispered, my voice cracking as I tried to hold back the tears.

Why? Why all of a sudden? In the blink of an eye, he was willing to throw away everything. The memories, the laughs, the sweet kisses, the midnight strolls... The love.

I was in love with him. I was in love with this boy, this heartless boy. Where did we go wrong? Was it something I did? Was it something he said?

"I have to go." He began walking away. Walking away from everything.

"Please, Kobie! Don't leave me." The tears finally spilled over. My heart broke with every step he took, his boots crunching against the fall leaves."Kobie..."

I watched his silhoette, until there was nothing but the darkness. I leaned against the tree that was behind me. I needed him. He was my everything, and now that he was gone, all I had was... nothing.

I collapsed onto the ground, burrying my face in my hands as small sobs shook my body. As night fell, the air became harshly cold. I wonder how long I sat there, wishing I could just disappear.

"What are you doing out here?" Someone asked. Startled, I looked up. There stood Neville Longbottom, my best friend. "Merlin, you must be out of your bloody mind. It's freezing out here! What happened?"

I sighed and watched the white smoke that escaped my lips. "Kobie.... He-he broke up with me," I replied in a whisper, surprised that I was even able to speak clearly.

Neville shook his head and held out a hand. "Let's go inside. You'll catch a cold."

I shook my head, but stood anyway. Neville removed his jacket and tossed it over my thin shoulders. He was always so kind to me, willing to give up his only source of warmth so that I wouldn't be cold.

I recalled a time when we were children. Our grandparents stood on the porch, watching us as we frollocked in the backyard, laughing as we always did. Neville suddenly tripped and landed flat on his face. That was when I'd heard his grandmother remark about how he lacked any qualities his father had posessed. I'd shook my head, knowing that Neville was his own person and that he was amazing.

Neville and I arrived in the Gryffindor common room. It was empty with the exception of a few students crammed in the corners poring over text books. Neville led me over to the couch in front of the fire and I took a seat. The sudden warmth emitting from the glowing fire brought a faint smile to my lips, but it slowly faded.

"Why would that guy want to break up with you? You're beautiful," whispered Neville. My eyes darted to him. What did he just say?

"Me? Beautiful? As if. You're just saying that to make me feel better." I sighed and placed my hands in my lap, knowing that I was anything but beautiful. With my curly brown hair and hazel eyes, I knew that there wasn't anything special about me. I was... plain.

"How can you say that?" He shook his head. "Gosh, I'd give anything to..." He trailed off and his cheeks tinted a light shade of pink as he averted his gaze. By the look on his face, he seemed to be having some kind of internal battle with himself.

"To what, Neville?" I watched him, the orange glow from the fire dancing on his face.

"To call you mine."

And with that, he leaned over and kissed me.

All the pain that I'd felt before was suddenly washed away as a love I'd never felt greeted me, bathing me in a warmth that the fire before us could never supply
