The Greatest Man I Ever Knew

I know a man
Who's love for me
Is matched by none
Who could ever be

His strength of character
And love for life
Is unfailing, unchanging
Even in times of strife

This man knows more
Than I'll ever learn
And gives more respect
Than I'll ever earn

And though I don't deserve it
I know he gives it free
For no matter what I do or say
He's always there for me

He wears no mask
No other name
But to me he is
A hero just the same

He teaches me that life
Is a never ending quest
To keep focused on God
And do your very best

He reminds me that we
Must always find a way
To push through hardships
To reach a better day

As I walk through life
He's held my hand
Side by side we've walked
Like footprints in the sand

And I know if his
Stay near to mine
He'll never leave me
And I'll be just fine

Who is this one
Who never leaves my side?
Who is this one
In whom I can confide?

He goes by many names
Christian, brother, friend
Me, I call him Dad
For he'll love me to the end

True everybody has one
They all brag what he can do
But who can say their dad
Is the greatest man I ever knew?

A man as great as this
Deserves more than I can give
But what I have is a promise
Of what I'll be and how I'll live

I'll continue in your path
And because you've carved the way
I can do my best
In the coming day

And my promise to you
Is to make you proud
By pressing on
And leaving the crowd

So that one day
I can raise a son
And teach him how my father
Said the race was won

And if I teach him well
He'll be just like you
For I'll teach him
What God would have him do

A third set of prints will follow
In everything we do
And side by side we'll walk
With the greatest man I ever knew
