-Flashback-
He looked at me as if he could see right through me. Alex, my boyfriend of two years, had the look of fake hurt in his eyes. He took me by the hands and looked me in the eyes. people passing by on the streets gave us strange looks. We were standing in the middle of the sidewalk. We had just left the local farmers market. I looked Alex in the eyes with the same look.
"I can't do this anymore, I just can't. I'm sorry." He said to me. His thumb brushed my knuckles gently.
"You can't do what? Why are you sorry? Alex you're scaring me." I reply. My arms began to go numb and my body began to shake.
"I can't be your boyfriend anymore." He responds. The hurt in his eyes fading as he talked.
"Why? What did I do wrong?" I cry, pulling my hand away.
"You're too much for me to handle." He turns away to leave but I grab his wrist, pulling him back .
"No!" I yell. I feel people's gaze land on me, but I don't pay attention." You cant walk away without telling me why I'm too much too handle."
Alex pulls himself out of my grip and walks away, leaving me alone.
-Flashback over-
That memory plays over and over in my head all day everyday.
"Miss. Blake??" My teacher,Mr.Mawts, calls to me, pausing the memory of the recent break-up.
"Huh?" I say, earning a laugh from the class.
"Nevermind." He scoffs. He turns his back to his class to write some kind of mathematic equation on the chalk board. The bell stops him. Everyone floods out of the room and to their lockers. I stay behind to pack up my books, letting the halls clear before I leave.
I pull my books to my chest and walk out the door.
Someone across the hallway, filled with upper-class people, cleared their throat. I look up to see Miles, Mason, and Marcus. The new bad boys of the school, were looking at me with a smirk. Mason held a small folded up paper in his hand,Miles was motioning me towards them and Marcus just looked amused.
I decided to ignore the totally tempting event that was going to happen, hint the sarcasm, and walk towards my locker. Mason and his crew have been nothing but mean to me ever since they arrived at this school, two weeks ago. I have the bruises and blood stains to prove. Nobody knows that they bully me like this, not even my parents.
"Aye, yo. She's walking away from us, Marcus. What do we do now." Miles asked, his voice angered and confused. I stopped to hear what Mason was going to say. But to my suprise it wasn't him who replied, it was Marcus.
" I say we leave her." he sounded careless.
"I agree." Mason said.
A gasp escaped my lips when I felt an arm wrap around my waist and pull me closer to the side. I look at who had pulled me to them. Their blonde hair draping in front of their baby blue eyes. I instantly knew who it was.
"In need of a punching bag, huh Marcus?" I ask as I glare at him.
"You know me so well don't you? But not today." he smirked. His blue eyes shined making my insides churn.
"Over the years of you and your two goons bullying me, yes, I've gotten to know you very well." I retorted, attempting to pull my arm away.
"Really? Proove it then." He smiled. He thought that I didn't know him that well. I had to show him he was wrong!
I thought about how much I knew about the boy. "Your name is Marcus Eugine Greye, You're originally from Cardale,Manhattan. You tell everyone that you're 18 but you are actually 16. You have never had a relationship of more than 3 weeks, and if you did they cheated on you after the second week. You've never been held back. You get straight A's in all your classes. You play cool so you dont end up like me, the loser of the school." I inhaled the dust off the lockers.
Marcus covered his mouth in shock. His eyes widened. "Wow. I didn't know you knew that much about me." His voice sounded surprised.
"Well, I know more than that but it doesn't matter." I roll my eyes.
"Why doesn't it matter?"
"Because you're the school bully. You probably think it's strange that I know that much about you." I say.
"That doesn't mean anything though." Marcus retorted.
"It should." I frowned.
"Well, it doesn't. Not to me,anyway." He lied.
I rolled my eyes again.
"Will you stop that?"
"Stop-"
"Never mind." Marcus growled. "I need a favor from you."
"Can it wait? I need to be getting home."
Marcus shook his head."No, because you'll probably need time to think."
"Think about??" I prodded him to continue.
"Will you be my fake girlfriend?" He whispered.
"Seriously? Why me?"
"When you told me what you knew about me, I knew it had to be you." He explained.
Mason brushed his black hair back with one hand, making my insides churn once more.
"But why?' I ask."Why do you need a fake girlfriend, when you could just get a different more beautiful girl?"
I begin to walk away only to be pulled back.
"I don't want a different girl, I want you. You, no matter how much you hate someone, never take your anger out on someone else, you hold it all in. I know that must suck."
"Marcus?"
"Yeah?" He responds. Marcus's eyes would never completely meet mine.
"If I said yes, how it work?"
A smile smile formed in the corner of his mouth."Well it would work like a real relationship would but only me and you would know it wasn't for real."
"But-"
Marcus put his finger to my lips to shut up. "Enough with the 'buts' and 'what ifs". Will you please be my fake girlfriend?" he whispered the word fake so only I could hear him.
"I'll think about it." I answer, making a smile form on his lips. I faked a smile in return.
I turned to where I was originally going, my locker. The hallway was empty, nobody was around to see what had just happened between me and Marcus.
"Hey! Wait! I forgot to tell you something!" Marcus yelled as he ran towards me. The sound of his feet hitting the ground became louder and louder as he closed the distance between us.
I turned around to see that he had stopped running a few feet away and he began to walk.
"I- I for-fo- forgot t- to tell y-yo- you some- something." He repeated between pants.
"you said that already." I responded. I mimicked his panting.
"I did? Oh. But any ways." His loss of memory makes me laugh, actually laugh. I didn't have to fake a laugh or a smile, it just happened." I forgot to tell you that if you do say yes that it will have to last up to 6 weeks or more, depending on how good of an actor you are." He added.
I scoffed at him before nodding in agreement."Whatever."
I turned away to hide my smile.I reached my locker a moment later. A piece of notebook paper was taped to the front of it. Something was written on it with black ink. I pulled of the paper, leaving the tape behind.
The paper read:
"To:Malena From: Marcus..... Circle Yes or No. Return to me tomorrow."
Boys are so hard headed I thought to myself.
I pulled my backpack out of my locker but it was stuck. I yanked and pulled but it was stuck. I decided to give up and go home empty handed. I shut my locker and walked towards my house.Marcus
I watched her as she walked away. She was the one... The one my mom would believe was mine. This was only a fake relationship. I couldn't let it go too far. It can't be like last time. I can't let myself fall for her. I just cant. She isn't my type. Nothing will change that. She will still be the loser that i pick on. I will always be the bully.
I seen her walk away from her locker without her backpack. Malena had the note held tight in her fist.
Her backpack strap hung out of her locker. Something was wrong. I walked over to her locker and took out her backpack.
