Chapter 9

Year 850

Two years after joining the cadets.

~Elijah Pov~

Arriving at the Survey Corp HQ, I was approached by a Soldier.

"I am here to see Commander Erwin. I have important documents from squad leader Helene Nightingale." I address the soldier, clutching the satchel that rested against the side of my hip.

"I am sorry sir but I-I can't let you in." He stutters, shaking slightly under my glare.

"What do you not understand about 'important documents'." I rhetorically asked before pushing past him and matching down the halls towards commander Erwin's office.

I've been here once before with Helene but that was years ago, yet not much had changed since the last time I was here.

Stopping outside large wooden, instantly knowing it was the door to Erwin's office. A sharp 'Come in' was shouted after a loud knock from me, informing Erwin of a presence. Stepping into the room and closing the door behind me before facing the man behind the desk.

"Commander Erwin, I am Elijah Stratos, former soldier of Helene Nightingale's squad. I have some important documents that concern you." I tell him whilst saluting to him, I watch as his eyes slightly widen at the mention at the now deceased Helene. Reaching into the satchel I pull out the thick clump of documents and place them on his desk.

"That is all." I say before turning to leave through the door.

"Helene, what happened to her?" Erwin asks, making me freeze in place and think back to her last moments. Her screams of pain, the breaking of her bones and how I failed to save her. My breath hitched in my throat, causing me to choke.

"She, she sacrificed herself for humanity and her...her daughter." I quietly say the last part but made sure he heard it.

"Daughter?" He asks in shock, his eyebrows raised.

"Athena Nightingale, or as her mother knew her by, Athena Erwina Smith." I answer his question, keeping my face straight before I leave the room without another word being said. Glancing over my shoulder to see and shocked and surprised Erwin.

Huh, I guess he didn't know either. Interesting...

~Athena's Pov~

Heavy rain beats down on us as we run through the thick mud. My cape, sodden through due to thick drops clung to my figure as I run through the forest at the back of the group.

"Pick up the pace, you lead-healed laggards!" Keith's voice boomed from atop the horse, he continues to give us the 'tough love' treatment as we undergo the task.

"Let's see some hustle!"

I swear one day I will show this man who's boss and it certainly isn't him. I know that deep down he knows that one day he will get a reaction from one of his cadets.

Looking over my shoulder I see Armin slowly falling behind the rest of the group, if he doesn't catch up soon he will be left.

"Reiner, go and help Armin. Please, he would recognise me if I helped him." I asked the blonde besides me, he just puffs out some air before slowing his pace slightly. Grabbing a hold of Armin's bag, he throws it over his shoulder, running alongside him but within seconds Armin grabs his bag and run quicker.
