As the two walked on Mia spoke up. "Where are we headed?"
"Do you like the circus?" Deaths voice rang out through the silence of the forest. Mia's face lit up happily.
"I've never been to a circus! I've heard so many wonderful things about them tho!" She squealed in joy as the scenery around them shifted from an autumn forest to a snow pine. Death put his list away after reading the name of the next pour soul. The two reached a clearing in the trees where a horrifying event was taking place.
A lion had escaped its torturous cage and was shot dead on the spot as it tried to escape. Mia gasped in horror and ran towards the lions corps. Mist again rose as death approached swinging his Scythe. The girl hugged the lion who began to cry.
As death waited for the girl to finish consoling there new companion he looked to the men at the crime scene. They were heartless just like most of humanity these days. But who was he to judge heartless people when he hadn't one himself. Looking to the lions body, scars covered the pour beast and the shackles around its paws caused deep cuts and bruises. Death sighed and turned towards the small girl who's gaze was focused to him.
"I'm afraid I no longer want to go to a circus." She ran to him hugging his legs. He patted her head and they continued down.
"Mr. Death?" Mia asked sometime later.
"Yes child?"
"Where are we headed now?" She looked up to him and frowned. "Are we going to another circus?"
"No, were going somewhere much better."
The walk was silent until the trees faded away into a white light and. Large stone wall appeared. Before them was a metal gate with and arch over head.
"Where are we now?" Death let go of the child's hand and kneeled before her.
"This is where everyone goes to live forever. You get to see all the people you've lost or seen leave. It's a good place." Death spoke the words he always had. He never knew if it were true or not. Some people crossing this stage don't go to a good place. Having met the devil himself he could confirm that fact.
"Are you coming to?" As Mia spoke Death processed the words.
"I'm afraid I can't. But I assure you, you will be fine without me." He thought for a moment. The child frowned.
"But I wanna stay with you? All my friends are gone, your my last one!" Mia's lip quivered as she spoke and Death stood up. He was afraid to look behind him. He knew who would be standing there.
There was a time long ago when a similar situation happened with a young woman. She had known death in life and stirred trouble. From that point on the devil enjoyed watching as souls were sent to there final resting place.
Refusing to take the Devils offer he tried to console the girl to no avail. Mia simply watched as the lion walked trough the gate and disappeared. Death sighed and felt defeat wash over him. As much as he wished to not, this little girl had caused him to grow a heart. He had been warned that this may happen and what would become of him if he allowed him self a heart.
That was why the Devil was here.
He turned around and lifted Mia off the ground. As he walked away from the white and back to the land of the living Mia's mist began to darken.
"I see we have a rebel here?" His voice was low and smooth. A smirk was plastered to his face as he stepped forwards.
"Do as you say, just get it done with." Death growled in hate. With a wave of the Devils hand the child was gone. Death sent a glare and the Man vanished with the child.
"Three days..." the wind seemed to speak.
Death walked away, he knew nothing more could be done. I the child could not pass on in peace she would stay in the world on the living. She would still be dead of course but she would be changed.
We've all heard the stories of ghosts and demons haunting this earth, well another was just born.
The three days went by slowly. 72 hours after the girl's death, in the same place we died, Death waited. He had just dropped off a few souls at the gate and now he was waiting. The girls body was no longer there but freshly dug soil marked by a single stone sat beneath him.
His eyes closed and he wondered what the Devil would do this time. In recent situations like this, the soul was warped into a hideous form and left to wander the world. But he must have been in a good mood, or a malevolent one depending on who you asked.
As Death opened his eyes he saw a beautiful woman. It was obviously the same child from three days ago but she sat in front of him, a dark red misty form. Long hair draped down her back and her face shone with sadness. She stood and began to sing.
Death watched as she walked around the graves. A long dress trailed behind her torn and ripped. Leaves moved in the wind as she walked.
A man entered the grave yard holding a bushel of flowers. She walked by him and the man froze. He dropped the flowers and left.
She was a demon of loneliness.
The Devil was cruel.
She had done nothing wrong yet will be alone for ever. Death closed his eyes and he felt his heart slowly leave. Yes that's what the deal was. Punishment, not to him, but to the one who had giving him the thing he yearned for. But he soon forgot his wanting to feel.
He turned away from the red Demon only to see a red leaf laying on the ground. He picked it up and realized it was that same leaf given to him three days ago. Only it no longer crumbled to dust. He held onto it and continued forward.
A new name was on his list.
(So sad story, yeah. I'm depressing I know. I'm to tires to fix any errors so you'll just have to live with my horrible trying skills)
