Logan's POV

I walked into the cafeteria. The morning had slowly gone by and I needed a break. I aced my bio test, but failed to realize it wasn't going towards my final grade. Basically, I did well for nothing. That always bothered me. I mean if you work hard on something, shouldn't you get the proper credit?

The lunch line wasn't too long, so I decided to buy whatever they had. Looking ahead of me, I saw breaded chicken sandwiches and french fries. I also saw two people practically eating each other. My stomach did flips as I watched the action. Max had his hands on Meredith's hips, really too close to her ass in my opinion, and was crushing his lips into hers. She, on the other hand, gently had her arms wrapped around his neck. One word followed by a completely different sentence filled my thoughts. Gross. I wish I was in Max's position.

The two finally pulled apart and started to walk away with their food. I was about to yell that they didn't pay when Meredith skirted around Max's large frame and hand a fifty dollar bill to the cashier lady.

I got my food, paid, and went to sit next to Carter and Derek in the far corner. They had frowns on their faces.

"What?" I asked.

Carter leaned in. "Meredith called the goons off of you." he whispered.

"How did you know? I didn't even tell you, yet!" I exclaimed.

Derek slapped his hand over my mouth and hissed, "Shhhhhh. Everyone knows. You know how gossip travels around here. Especially when it has to do with Barbie and Ken." I bite his hand. "Ow. Gross, dude!"

I smiled apologetically. I just really hated him calling Meredith something other than her name.

I sighed. "Yeah. I guess. Max must hate me."

Derek and Carter both looked down as if they did something wrong.

"What?" I questioned.

Carter looked up with pain set in his eyes. "I'll tell you when we go to the cafe, okay?"

I knew if he said that, he wouldn't tell me a minute sooner. Plus, if it was really bad, he wouldn't hold it from me. I nodded, signaling I understood and respected his decision. He and I had gone way back and I never forgot his trust in me, and I in him.

The cafe's welcoming aroma filled my nostrils. Just like the morning, my afternoon was filled with teachers who did not want to teach and students who did not want to listen. My friends and I sat in our normal seats. It was funny to think that almost four years ago, we had come to this cafe to gossip about the new boys and girls in our class that weren't from our middle school.

I snap my head to where Meredith normally sits as soon as I got my hot chocolate. She was in her seat with War & Peace sitting on her lap. Her eyes sparkle as they shoot across the pages, her lips twisting into a smile.

"Man, you really like her, don't you?" Derek asked.

I couldn't help a smile spread across my face. "Yeah. I think I do." I chuckled softly and looked at my friends, the smile falling off. "But we know I will never be able to have her. She's a part of a social circle a hundred stories above us."

I was about to ask about what Carter wanted to tell me, when loud shouting reached everyone's ears. I turned in my chair to see Max Harrington yelling at a calm looking Meredith A. Harper. His face was completely red, the veins popping out of his neck. Meredith just sat there with her book closed. Max said something and waited for his girlfriend to respond.

Once again, she flashed a blinding smile and said something no one expected.

"I'm breaking up with you."
