*Emma*
“Ice cream straight ahead,” Luke pointed, wiggling his eyebrows at me. I laughed slightly, still not over the earlier events.
“C’mon then,” I said, pulling him behind me. We entered the little ice cream parlor and walked up to the counter. “I had no clue there was this much ice cream in the world,” I gasped.
Luke laughed at me. “It’s almost too good to be true.”
“Um, no! Because I’m just going to eat all of it.”
“As long as you share.”
“Of course!”
“Now what to do you want?” Luke asked as we both moved up in line.
“Mint chocolate chip with sprinkles and a waffle cone.”
“You would pick the most boring flavors,” Luke rolled his eyes.
Even though I knew he was just joking, that stung a little. I’ve known since a young age that Keelie was always the more exciting one. I’ve always been the boring one. Luke was just kidding, but it still added to that insecurity.
“Two mint chocolate chips with sprinkles and both of those in waffle cones please,” Luke told the lady at the counter, handing her a ten.
“I can pay,” I told him.
“Nah, it was my idea,” Luke smiled.
“I thought you said that was boring?” I asked, a smile playing at the corners of my lips.
“Boring, but delicious.”
I rolled my eyes and laughed, thanking the lady who handed us our ice cream cones. We walked out of the store and strolled into the hot night air.
“Hold this for a sec? Someone’s calling me,” Luke said. He handed me his cone and then pulled out his phone. “Calum? Yeah, we just got ice…what? They were? Yeah, yeah. On our way.” Luke hung up and tugged on my hand.
“What’s up?” I asked nervously.
“Leon’s pissed because we weren’t there when he came to talk to everyone and Cal said neither of our moms seemed very happy either.”
“Oh no,” I gulped. More than anything, I hated to have people mad at me.
“The hotel’s right around the corner; we’ll be fine,” Luke tried to reassure me, but he didn’t look to sure himself.
We practically ran the whole why, ditching our ice cream somewhere on the sidewalk. We composed ourselves as we walked into the lobby. Nicole’s and Calum’s faces greeted us.
“How screwed are we?” Luke asked nervously.
“Try beyond screwed,” Leon says behind us harshly. Luke and I turned around slowly. “I expect better behavior then that. Just running out without telling anyone where you were going? That’s immature. I expected better from you Luke. And Emma, I expect you not to act like the dumb blonde you are. I will have no problem kicking you off the trip and if this happens again, you’ll have to worry aout your mother’s fate as well. Same goes for you Luke. Three strikes and you’re out. Don’t make me have to do that,” Leon said bitterly before turning on his heel and walking out.
I gulped trying to keep the tears in. I kept my face turned downwards, not wanting anyone else to see my reaction.
“That was uncalled for,” Nicole said.
“Em…,” Luke said to me, but another for cut him off.
“Emma Jean,” my mother’s voice ran out loud in clear and the crowd less hallway. My mother is a hard woman to anger, but it looks like I did just that. “Do you know what you just did?” She asks me exasperatedly. “
“Mom, I didn’t me-.”
“Emma, I really don’t care right now,” she said it so coldly, it made me flinch, something I haven’t done since my dad left. “Leon threatened to have my job taken away. I finally am able to take care of this family and you almost blow it! I can’t have you doing that again.”
“I didn’t mean to,” I choke out. Tears were starting to poor down my face and I knew the sobs would be coming soon.
“Stop with the excuses! You’re just like your father,” she spat. She shook her head at me then turned on her heel and strutted down the hallway.
I covered my mouth as the first sob emerged.
“Hey,” Nicole said, but I turned and ran down the hall before any of them could say anything else.
“Emma!” I heard Luke and Calum shout at the same time. I didn’t stop though. I pulled out my room card and ran into my room. Big mistake.
“Hey, what’s wrong?” Keelie said, standing up and moving towards me. I shook my head and dodged into the bathroom. “Emma!” Keelie shouted, pounding on the bathroom door. There was no way I was going to answer it though. I sunk to the floor, shaking as sobs racked my body.
My mom had gotten mad at me before, but never like that. To compare me to my father was unthinkable; something I never thought she would do. After all he had done to us. After all he had put me through, not that anyone knew about that. But it still hurt to think she would say something like that to me. Especially when she knew I hadn’t meant any harm. It didn’t mean to hurt anyone, but now it turns out I might ruin loads of people’s lives. Mom, Keelie, Luke. Why did I have to go and screw everything up?
I leaned my head against the wall and tried to calm down. It was only the first day. I wasn’t going to screw anything up again.
“Emma?” A voice spoke through the door quietly.
How didn’t he hate me? If he gets kicked off of the tour, it’ll all be my fault and my fault alone.
“Em? Open the door please?”
“No,” I said softly.
“No one else is here. Keelie freaked when Nicole told her what happened and everyone else left. No one wants to pressure you into coming out if you’re not ready.”
I took a deep breath and slowly opened the door. Luke looked a little surprised that I had decided to come out. But I had decided I could trust him as much as I trusted Keelie, which was a lot, but not completely. I knew I was going to start crying again. I walked straight into his arms and buried my face in his chest, holding onto him tight. Right now all I needed was someone to hold me.
