Hey guys! I know it's late, but Happy New Year! I hope you guys have a good one! :D Sorry about the wait for the last chapter... Should be posting more regularly now that I have my own laptop ^.^ and once I get internet on it (no wifi, have a wireless modem plugged into the computer and a SIM card in my iPad) I might be able to upload a little quicker as well :D I used to have to share, and while I had my iPad, i find it better to type on actual keyboards.... Anyway, here's chapter 5 of The Virus!
-----------------------------
As I look around at everyone, laughing and talking, I feel warmth spread through me. We have all managed to find each other, and I have found my friends.... Most of them anyway... But I'm glad I've found the ones that I have.
We are all sitting around in a circle having lunch, having a break from training and barricading, after I have done a round introductions. While the number of mouths to feed and the necessity for food has increased with Felix's arrival, I'm glad he found us. I've missed him almost as much as I missed Toby... Or maybe the same amount, just in a different way, the way a sister would miss her brother. Toby was never really happy that I was talking to him, because the was some bad blood between them over shit that happened while Felix was going to school, but I never let that stop me from getting close to him. He was always a great guy to talk to, and someone I could share gossip with and rant to. As time went by, we ended up getting close enough to be practically family, and stayed that way ever since.
"So, how ya been, sis?" Felix asks, throwing his arms around my shoudlers.
"Oh, you know, running, hiding, surviving... What about you lil bro?" I say with a little smirk at the end, knowing how much he hates me calling him little.
"Jeez, Kel, I'm taller than you. Just because you're older than me," he laughs. "And I;ve been doing the same as you, trying to find, someone, anuone so I wouldn't be alone."
"You haven't been able to find anyone?"
He shakes his head. "You guys are the first glimpse of civilisation that I've had in weeks. Well, sane civilisation, that is... Heh, as sane as you can be, hey sis?" He says jokingly, giving me a playful little shove.
Everyone laughs, and it's great to hear and see them all so happy. It's been a pretty dark and depressing time for everyone, and, true to form, Felix has lightened the mood. I look at Toby next to me, and see him smiling a little. He notices me looking at him and looks back at me. I reach over and grab his hand, and he squeezes mine back, giving me a little smile. Felix notices, then takes his arm from around me. I lean into Toby, and give Felix a little smile of gratitude. He smiles back and nods in understanding, raising a cup to his lips and taken a sip of the water we boiled and sanitized over a fire we built outside.
"Had you managed to catch up with anyone when the world first went to shit?" Patrick asks.
"Yeah, a few of my friends, but thats's about it. One night, they just disappeared. I think they went out, thinking it was safe, and got ambushed and taken away. Either that, or they just went off without me. Either way, they're probably dead by now," Felix replies, giving a casual shrug.
There was a time when hearing about young teens missing and presumed dead would have warrented gasps of shock; now, it's just like any other news, not new and the kind of stuff that's already running through your head.
"Well, you've got us now, and you dont have to worry about being unprotected, trying to find a good safe place to sleep, and you don't have to worry about food," I say, trying to lighten his spirits a little. "But that doesnt mean that you can go pigging out whenever you want to," I add good naturedly.
