tw: food mention

Phil lester did not ask Dan Howell out on a date. He was just an extremely unlucky person, and he got caught in a stream of unlucky events, each even more unlucky than the last.

He didn't even like Dan, funnily enough. Dan was annoying, and bratty, and he certainly wasn't friend material to Phil. Definitely not boyfriend material. It was also the fact that he hated Dan so much that he ended up having to pretend to date him, for this one night at least. It'd been an argument like any other, except this time it was in public instead of at school, and his mum had been present.

Phil had been in a store looking for a nice outfit. His mother had planned a family dinner and invited every relative she could, for god knows why. Then, she'd dropped the bomb on him at the last minute, telling him that he had to look nice, much nicer than the jeans and t-shirt he'd been wearing. But that all came after the first unlucky thing that had happened to him. Phil was sure that if had just woken up on time that morning none of the following events would've even happened.

Unlucky Event #1

Phil raced down the stairs, hair in disarray and sleep still encrusted in the corners of his eyes. His alarm hadn't gone off, although he knew that he'd set it last night, which didn't make any sense, but now he was late. His mum had asked him to pick up a few things before the dinner tonight, and he'd told her that he would get it today. Unfortunately, or maybe unluckily, he was late, and now he wasn't exactly sure if he'd be able to get everything in time.

He trampled through the kitchen, grabbing a granola bar to eat as he walked into town, and continued to the front door, where he hurriedly shoved his feet into his shoes. He was just about out the door, his breakfast already shoved into his mouth with the wrapper crumpled in his hand, when his mother called after him.

"Phil, honey, can you come here a sec?" She said, making Phil groan around the food in his mouth and retrace his steps, back through the kitchen and into the living room.

"Are you going out now? You're have my list, right?" She questioned, and Phil nodded, desperately chewing the bar.

"And you have a nice outfit picked out?" She continued, making Phil choke. A nice outfit? For what?

"Huh?" Phil uttered after finally swallowing what he had eaten, and his mother's eyes narrowed, coming to the realization that he wasn't on the same page as her.

"Nice clothes? You know, for my dinner tonight?" Her tone was threatening, almost daring him to say anything other than 'yes, and they look charming as well!'

"You didn't tell me that I had to dress up!" Phil said, his voice raising in agitation. "Next thing you'll be telling me to bring my boyfriend around."

"You have a boyfriend?" She gasped, and Phil groaned. How could she see straight through his jokes and sarcasm but not even think to tell him that he needed to look nice tonight?

"No, I was kidding," he said, and she looked at him skeptically.

"Fine. Go get me the rest of the ingredients and we'll meet at one of those stores you like. We can find you a nice outfit there," she said, thankfully dropping it, and Phil nodded his agreement. He turned around and finally left the house, a cloud of annoyance surrounding him. He now knew that he probably wouldn't have any time to hide in his room before his relatives showed up.

Unlucky Event #2

After having such a horrible morning, Phil hadn't thought that anything else would go astray. He was wrong.

At the store, he had found everything he needed without any major difficulties, which he definitely thought was a step in the right direction. He'd left with bags in his hands, happily swinging by his sides with his newly uplifted mood. Now all he had to do was meet his mum and find a nice outfit, which, if it all went smoothly, would leave him with a little bit of time to himself. Don't get him wrong, Phil didn't hate his relatives or anything, he just wasn't looking forward to having to be social with them for the rest of the evening. They could be quite loud and a conversation could lag on for an entire hour if you weren't careful, and Phil knew from experience that they'd be offended if he fell asleep while they were talking.

He soon found himself at Topman, where he knew his mother was planning to meet him. She had texted him and told him that she was there already, so now all he had to do was find her.

It was after about five steps into the store that he was sidetracked, seeing as how there were some cool galaxy jackets placed right by the entrance, which Phil thought was enough to catch anyone's attention. He'd simply been minding his own business, holding a jacket and turning turning the tag over to see how expensive it was, when he was very rudely bumped. Someone had shoved past him, their shoulder slamming against his harshly, and he turned in their direction, glare already formed on his face.

"Oops, didn't see you there," said none other than Dan Howell, who had turned around to see Phil's reaction. He scoffed.

"Oh really? Because I'm pretty sure I'm the tallest one in here," Phil said, cocking his head and pretending to look around the store, perhaps for a taller person. Dan rolled his eyes, seeing how Phil often used his height as an advantage. Dan had yet to hit his major growth spurt (Phil secretly hoped that he never would, as he loved being able to tower over the prick who he fought with every day) and stood at a lowly 5'7, which left Phil more than half a foot taller than him.

"You're about as wide as you are tall, which is probably why I couldn't help running into you," Dan snapped, and Phil clenched his fists angrily. It wasn't rare that he was restraining himself from smacking Dan right across the face, and sometimes he wasn't sure why he stopped himself at all. But yeah, Phil was a lot taller than Dan, which resulted in him being heavier also. He couldn't help it that Dan was practically a twig, who he was sure he'd have no problem snapping in half.

Phil opened his mouth to retort, and it would've been something witty, he was sure, but that's when his mother showed up.

Unlucky Event #3

"Oh Phil, who's this?" A voice asked from behind him, which he recognized as his mother. The looks of contempt and dislike melted from his and Dan's faces as they turned to see his mum, a wide smile present on her face.

"Uh, this is... Dan," Phil said, not really sure how to explain that Dan wasn't his friend and didn't need to be introduced. She grinned broadly then, to the point that it was almost scary looking.

"Are you two friends from school?" She questioned, and in that moment Phil agreed with Dan completely. Their eyes meet at a sidelong glance, and Dan shook his head slowly.

"Not really..." He trailed, which made Phil's mum gasp loudly. For a second Phil thought that she was upset that they weren't friends, before he realized what exactly was going through her mind.

"Is this your boyfriend?" She practically squealed, and to him is sounded as if she'd shouted it. He felt like every head in the store was turned towards him, all of them hearing the word boyfriend, all of them knowing that he was the type of boy who liked boys. And sure, Phil wasn't uncomfortable with his sexuality one bit, and he liked that he was gay, but that didn't mean that everyone knew. That didn't mean that /Dan/ knew.
