I slip on my oversized sweater that I use to hide my body and put on a pare of black Hollister jeans. I then grab my pink book bag and rush down stairs to the kitchen to make breakfast for my family. It's my responsibility that I must do or else...dad won't let me go to the place I love. School.
"Natalie! Come down here now!" I suck in a deep breath and make my way down the creaking steps.
"Coming, sir." I take a deep breath as soon as I make it down the last step.
"Do you love school Natalie?" My father asks in a sweet but teasing tone.
"Yes, sir." I look at his feet, not daring to look at him in the eyes.
"So, why can't you do what is expected of you? WHY CANT YOU BE AS SMART AT HOME AS YOU CAN IN DAMN SCHOOL! Look at me when I speak to you!" I hesitantly bring my eyes up to his face. As he continues to yell I start to day dream and block it out. It always works.
"I'm sorry, sir I assure you that I was coming downstairs to cook breakfast for you and Jonny." I assured him that I was going to do what I was obligated to do. He starts to laugh hysterically and I immediately know that this can go terribly wrong in just a few seconds.
"I don't even know why I bother. Watch when you get married, I tell ya, he will thank me for breaking you and enjoy having you as nothing but a maid. Ha! Only using you for what you have to offer." He shoos me away and I hurry and grab my book bag and race to the door, closing it behind me. He can't break me.
